I am trying to create a gravestone with lettering in it (etched into the stone)

Can anyone give a quick run down of how to achieve this - I have made a simple stone, but I cant find the new text tools and am not sure how to boolean it out of the stone..

Much appreciated!

OK - found the text tool (quick guide and a lot of squinting!) so I choose font and try to type a sentence in - arrrrrg! - ONly 1 letter, or 2 in vertical come up.. I dont see any more....??

edit: ok - if I type quick I get more letters.. It seems to convert ehm to meshes as soon as it can, without waiting fo rme to finish. Thereby rendering me unable to add any more text to that paragraph. urg!

OK - another thing driving me nuts (not on the cheat sheet!)

I am trying to change the shape of the top of the headstone by moving the horizontal planes up and down, however, since extruding them, I can move them up or down because the planes that get selected are always in front.. So how do I select a plane that is within a group of other planes (sides) ??

The image shows the top plane selected, I want to select the next one down..

Yeah, I think doing a boolean for the text is the way to go. Looks like you will need more geometry on the face of the gravestone though before you do it.

As for selecting the face, I might be misunderstanding but you can always select the four vertices or edges below the top face. Once you extrude there really isn't a face where the extrusion came from anymore.

Ya Dele's suggest will work, adding more geometry will also help to create a smooth shape, you may want to switch to a side view and marquee select the vertices you want to select. If you switch to Workspace you could select by loop, which would work as well.

OK - thanks guys - that helped/confirmed a few things..

The text tool is working again now.. no idea why it stopped!

Man - I wish it was like Max - put in a whole sentence or paragraph and change it later if needed!!

Re the boolean, it turns out the lettering is stuck on, so no need ! :-)

or try out a displacement map, almost cheating but hey that's what this is all about, illusions ;)

Yeah - I thought about that but haven't tried them before - it would make adding text much easier though woulnt it! - just render the text in photoshop and displace it!

Thanks :-)

In tS7.5 Workspace the text tool is exactly like this. You can change the text, kerning, leading, font, quality and the bevel type and strength at will.

I wonder if it's just a bridge problem? Try turning off the bridge and working only in Workspace when using the text tool. Not sure if that will help or not, but I almost always have the bridge off and just turn it on to transfer things across when needed. Keeps things running faster and smoother I think.

Edit: Actually tS crashes for me when I have the bridge set to on or auto and have the model view open while editing text. So definitely have the workspace open when using the workspace text tool.

You can also use the polydraw tool to draw out the lettering and then connect it up as quads.

Which is how I created the text for this image:
