Hiya.

Q: How do I select an "Edge Loop" or "Edge Ring" (or, for that matter, "Polygon Loop" or "Polygon Ring")?

Ex: Say I have a cube that has been subdivided a few times. I have a cube that is divided into, lets say, 3 sections on a side (like a Rubik's cube). Now, I select one of the edges in the middle of a face. How do I select the other edges that run paralel to it, all the way around the cube?

In Hexagon 2.1, all I do is use my hot keys; E, click on edge, R. ("Edge", select an edge, "Edge Ring selection"). Can this be done in tS 7.5, and if so, how? Thanks!

Here's 2 pics to help..

Now, select an "edge ring":

I'll tackle this one.
Edge Loops:

and Face Loops:

Tune in next week when we cover Froot Loops!

Excellent! :) Now I'm off to find the next question. :)

...well, that didn't take long. :)

Ok, how do I move a selection (face, edge, point) in one or two directions. For example, lets say I have a cube that I've added some 'slices' to. Now, I want to pick a middle 'slice' and move it ONLY in the X direction. What is the hot key for that? Or what's it called so that I can set my own hot key up?

Thanks again! :)

Like a lot of things in tS, there's more than one way:

Use the triangular sections of the widget- the direction depends on which of the three sections you click and drag on.
Or, you can toggle off an axis by clicking the X, Y, or Z icon. Disabled axis icon will be lighter color. No movement will happen along a disabled axis. You then use the Object Move/Rotate/Scale Tools to move your selection.

To set a hotkey in Workspace, Hold Control key while right-clicking the desired icon.

To set a hotkey in Model, hover over icon and press Control-F1.
You have to set different hotkeys for Model/Workspace- they can't share the same ones. (Don't ask me why not)6434

I think I'd be more partial to the 'widget' method...I just have to set hot keys for enable/disable the X, Y or Z. It kinda kills the work flow to have your mouse over the edge you are trying to move, then have to move the mouse cursor all the way down to the bottom of the screen to click a button, then go all the way back up to your selection...make your move...and have to do that over and over and over and over....etc. Kind of a time-waster there. :)

EDIT: Here's another one: How can I select several edges, then 'cut/connect' them? Again, in Hexagon I just select the edges I want, then hit my hot key (Shift-D) to Connect all the edges with a new poly-line. The only way I can see is by using the "Draw Poly" tool under the edit tools. Can the 'dimensioning' tool be used with this to make perfect vertex placements? (Ex: exactly 1/3, or 1/2 down the edge you are clicking on?). Anyway, back to the original edge --> connect question, here's what I mean:

Ex: Select some edges like so...

...now, Connect them (Shift-D for me):

There is no similar tool in tS to that last one. The only thing I can think is to use add edge to draw it by hand.

As for using the widget to move in X, Y, or Z, you can. Click and drag on the red, green, or blue bars on the widget to move in that axis. You can set the coordinates to world, object, or screen from the bottom toolbar.

You can use polydraw with the dimensioning tool to precisely create edges at half and thirds etc.

All you do is increase the edge points parameter of the dimension tool. 2 does thirds, 3 quarters. 1 does halves.

I like hexagon, but I think the polydraw tool is more intuitive and fun to use than selecting edges/points and connecting them as you do in hex.

Hiya.

So the dimentioning tool can let me divide to the middle (or third, or quarter)? Ok, that should work. :)

PS: Hexagon also has a "Polydraw" tool just like it is in tS. Best of both worlds I guess. :)

Hotkeys are definitely the way to go when dealing with common tasks such as move/rotate/scale, toggling axii on and off, and switching coord modes.

I don't think Hexagon's polydraw tool has the advanced point edit snapping features of TS7.5, but I'm not a Hex guru.

The validate routine in Hex also annoys me a bit, but it's a fine modelling app. Their are things I like about it more than TS, but nothing I can't live with.

I'm not sure what you mean. In Hex you can hold down the Shift key to auto-snap to the center of an edge or a vertex. Or you can just draw it to wherever you want. You can even choose vertexes/edges that are 'far away' from the current polygon/edge/vertex location and it will draw a polyline directly between your choices, automatically cutting/adding to any edges it passes through.

The validate routine in Hex also annoys me a bit, but it's a fine modelling app. Their are things I like about it more than TS, but nothing I can't live with.

Yeah, this is one thing that annoys a lot of folks. I just set one of my mouse buttons to be "Enter" and use that. :)

I'm totally lost here...I can't get the Dimension Tool to work at all in Edit mode. Is there some kind of button pushing sequence I have to do, or some parameter I have to check off to use polydraw with dimension tool?
