Hi,

I may have a stupid question but I am not able to find the right tool for the job.

I created simple cylinder and a text. Now I like to wrap the text around the cylinder. What would be the best approach? I tried the magnetic tool and then bend. I tried deform. But there must be an easy way to align an object to the surface of another or not?

Any ideas? Would be nice.

Regards

Not a stupid question at all KeilKenny. But I'm afraid there's no simple answer either. I don't think there are any tools for this Workspace side, but of the legacy tools in Model side, I think bend is closest to what you're looking for. You'll just have to eyeball it and line it up though.

Have you thought about adding the text beveling on the can in texture, say with a bump map or normal map?

Try turning on 'Collision With All' in the Model side and use that to align the text to the surface of the cylinder. Right click the tool for additional options.

One other method involves normalizing the location of your cylinder, rotating it 90 degrees, and then also normalizing the location of the axis of each letter and then rotating each letter into place.
Both methods involve moving each letter separately. Use the down and then right or left arrow key to select each letter in turn.
Bend might work if it's only a slight curve...too much and the text starts to deform.

Thank you both.

I'll try with Bump map since bend made me shout and curse :)

Thought of another way for you Kielkenny. If you put a texture on the cylinder with the letters on it, you could use the polydraw tool on workspace side to draw out the letters using the texture as a guide, then select the faces and extrude them. ;)

(Remember to hold CTRL while extruding so that all the selected polys extrude as one surface.)

This last suggestion from Jack Edwards looked interesting, I never tried that before so I gave it a go and it works great!

Thanks for the idea Jack! :D

Another trick that I use is just like Jack's, but I create a copy of the cylander, set it to 50% opacity and slightly larger scale for a guide then I dice and slice the other texture-less cylander. This removes texture distortion during the editing.
