Hi all,
I have a few TrueSpace 7.5 questions I hope someone can answer. I'll number them so referring to them is easy..
#1) Should I create and edit things in Workspace or Model?
It seems there are a lot more tools in Model. There's certain things I cant find in Workspace (such as Boolean add/subtract), but can find in Model. Although it seems that they intend people to work in Workspace, perhaps it is a work in progress as all tools are ported over?
#2) What are some users favorite tutorial, model and texture resource sites?
Especially any sites that are pro-TrueSpace or exclusive to it. Most sites I find in searches all have LWO and 3DS content but very little TS.
#3) What file formats import the best into TrueSpace?
I remember from using 3d apps (such as TS) a long time ago that certain formats (DXF, etc) never really translated well and always had significant issues. What formats are ideal to look for so I know if I purchase a professional 3d model that it should have the best chance to import properly?
#4) Are the video offered by Caligari worthwhile to any of those that have tried them, beyond the basics?
I've purchased many video tutorials in my time and even some of the most expensive (like Total Training) have excellent looking sample clips but when I purchase them, I'm often disappointed and learn very little. I am not a new trueSpace user but haven't touched it since version 3, and I am not new to 3D, so does anything think I will find those videos worth the price?
#5) Are there any better renderers than Vray in regards to rendering performance, features and quality that work with trueSpace?
I purchased Vray with TS but am curious why often my DX9 rendered view looks better than what I actually render.
Thanks for any tips! |

Sorry about the time lag, I was waiting for someone who knew all the answers, I'm kinda new at this too...
Here's a post from earlier today:
TS7.5 is in transition, the WS view is where, eventually, when everything is ported over to the new architecture, everything will be done. I, personally, feel more comfortable doing some things on the Model side, but as I understand it, the Model side will be phased out when this 'porting' is complete. My thoughts are that with each subsequent release, more and more of the tools (and new ones besides) will be moved over so we can become familiar with them in their new 'incarnation' on the WS side. As such, it will be better to try to do and learn as much as you can in WS, while 'weaning' yourself off of Model side.
2. Check/ search the posts - there is a whole thread, maybe with a 'sticky' on TS resources
3. I use .obj for all my 3D software - to export good .obj's in TS, use the 'luuv' plug-in (comes with the program)
4. I have a few of the courses - and am saving for more. The ones I have are very good - especially for beginners (The 'Texturing" course is great)
edit: You're not a beginner...you'll have to ask someone else on this too
5. you're going to have to ask someone else on this one - I like Lightworks and can't afford Vray.
Hope this helps,

I just have one answer for you, will think about the rest.
1) I'm not the best, but I find that swithcing between modeler and workspace the be my best workflow. Until I can get all the neat tools from modler to worksapce that is. |

Definitely Workspace. Workspace side is TS 7.x (A core re-write of the entire app). Model side is the old 6.6.
Workspace side is WAY more stable than Model side. I only use model side when I need a tool not yet in Workspace.
Nowherebrain is working on a really good series of tuts that are very affordable ($1) ;) and really good for getting you started on modeling:

VRay is one of the best render engines in the industry. Just takes a bit to learn it. Lighting is key. Try setting up two spot lights and and using GI. You can quickly create very nice looking renders. Materials are also key. Specular and reflectance mapping can really help to make materials look more realistic. The mapped phong shader is awesome. :)

Thanks for the pitch!..
I'm moving to my new site and new series(read better training) it will be just a bit more expensive, not as expensive as any courses I know of just a few bucks. The only problem is that you will need to wait until I get my shopping cart setup...should be soon though.
My course is based on modeling, texturing, then rigg and animate...with more to follow. |

Thanks for the replies.
I used TrueSpace3 extensively and I was suprised to see that even up to version 6, trueSpace has changed very little. Widgets are new though. Inference was an extremely good addition, just havent found how to enable that yet haha.
I've been trying to use the workspace and the modeling side as suggested here. I definitely find workspace mode is faster on my video card. In trying to go to 4-view Model view, I find I cant do that, I need to be in workspace on 3 out of the 4 views. Anyone know why?
Thanks for the tips. I agree with whats said here, lighting, texturing and modeling are all equally strong sides to creating a good scene. I've seen a bajillion good scenes with excellent modeling and texturing ruined by poor lighting. Too many people make scenes with ambient light or overbright just to see more detail, which IMHO is a mistake. Inversely I've seen poorly modeled and textured scenes saved by a clever light setup.
I'm mucking through the incomplete manual and if any good books pop up on the market, I just hope someone will point them out. I might check out those $1 videos but I'd still like to know if the $199 video sale is worthwhile to purchase from Caligari by anyone who's used them.
Thanks for the tips! |

Would anyone be able to elaborate as to why that option would be where it is? I finally found it last night but honestly thought this would be a part of the viewport configuration rather than embedded in a tool. This command would typically sit in a 'View' (or sometimes 'Window') menu when present, or otherwise a viewport config.
As a programmer, I presume it was put where it is because it was convenient code-wise to place it there. I just dont find it to be highly intuitive. |
