Importing models (3ds,lwo,etc), which is most reliable? // New Users

Hi all,
I find that I have a great deal of difficulty importing models I'm finding on the internet. I'm mostly importing free models to play with and many of them simply error in some way. Some say 'data error' and load nothing. Others load up but despite coming packaged with JPGs (textures/maps/yada), no textures are applied. Sometimes the geometry is completely bolluxed.
I want to purchase some models for a project coming up to use in TS7.5.1, but I'm afraid I'm going to buy one and it won't even work.
Is there any way to lessen this risk? Is there a non-TS format that works reliably on import? FWIW, .3ds seems to import very well. I had few if any issues with it. Some Lightwave .lwo files work, but most of them didn't in some way. Are .3ds files most reliable or which are?
Thanks! |

I find .lwo to be pretty good if you use the LUUV plugin. I've done some import using .3ds and while polygons seem to come in fine I tend to lose a few things UV map wise. In fact, most folks I know use LUUV for external texturing. |

Oops, I think you mean obj not lwo(lightwave object). I like the obj format too. It just seems better than most for importing and exporting to different applications. Collada looks promising but there's no import for trueSpace yet. |

Hi all,
OBJ is recommended as the most standard format for importing items into tS (or about any 3D app for that matter). Perhaps because it is "older" it is more standardized and is the format which seems to load best into the most apps.
Use the LUUV plugin on the model side to load (or save) OBJ format objects. The plugin is included in all installs of tS since tS6. It does a better job of importing textures than the default load in the File menu.

Kinda makes you wonder why it's not the default import? ;)
Thanks for the info! |

lol - even after reading these forums for a bit over a year, I did not clue into the luuv plugin until about 2 months ago. I would load up an obj file and then split it out to all it's miniscule parts, then I would re-texture everything in Truespace. With the luuv, I dont' need to do as much of that. :D I just wonder why you have to add it in instead of it being there on the toolbar to start with. |

Another format that TS7.51 has that will slowly start to gain momentum, DAE, as in Collada. It impotrs and epoxrts textures, shaders (to a point, don't expect fancy things here), lights, cameras, basic bones (no ikhandles/locks or constraint info) and animation, oh and I almost forgot weight information :)
I am now able to move full scenes between several packages that I have access to :D, I have a big smile about that.

How do you import a Collada file? I tried and failed. I thought only exports were possible at this time. |

Hmmm... that does not make sense at all... I am able to drag a Dae file to the library, but the file does not load into WS. I can bring up the windows file selector by right clicking in the library and selecting Import. In the Import options is listed Collada... yet the file will not load.
I guess I better rethink whether TS is going to work in this pipeline...

COLLADA is an export only format in tS at the moment - the plan there is to let you get animations made with physics, bones, and combinations of those, out to other packages that may not support such good bones, or have bones and physics interact.
BVH is both import and export.
Naturally, format plans are ever-evolving. The above is what was fitted in during tS7.51 (which was a "bug fix" patch really, and new features were squeezed in as much as we could ;) )
HTH!
