Well, this is a truly daft time to start a thread seeing as I'll be away from the computer and probably the internet as a whole for the whole of Christams in an hours time, but anyway...
Ever since WWotW's 'Headcans' and Georg's 'Factory' I felt like having a go at something with lots of pipes, so here it is. I guess it could be some sort of gas works or brwerey or syuch like, haven't really decided yet.
I think I'm close to finished - the first render picked out a few problems (like the over shiny lamp fixtures) and I felt like adding some volumetrics as I'm a bit partial to them, so the second render takes my close to what I had in mind. I've spotted a fault on th eleft hand side where I've managed to end up with a duplicate non-subdivided tank which means the faceting shows up badly; I've now deleted it but haven't re-run the render as it takes a good half hour at 800x600. I did a tiny bit of post process to add a tiny bit of glow around the lights, but that's all.
I'd be interested to hear any suggestions for wrapping this up before I pack it in - I'm sure some of you would like to see it much grimier but I haven't decided whether I want to go that route. Suggestions welcomed, although no promises I'll follow them! Partial screen cap included to show scene pre-sds... |

The second render is excellent, the only suggestion i have is to dirty the walkways and tanks up a bit, make it look a bit more 'used' |

Quickly scanning the images, I thought the first one was Art Deco style, I was impressed!
Then I realized the boiler room atmosphere, but was still impressed!
You may have instilled the possibility for future renderings with convoluted piping schemes reminiscent of Frank Lloyd Wright! |

Very nice. I like the vols but they're a bit heavy. If there's that much dust in the air the place sure won't be so squeaky clean. A subtle dirt layer over the walk way (where people's dirty shoes go) will make a huge difference.
The other thing I'd suggest, if I may, is to 'solidify' the stairs a bit. They cut across the image so the eye can't help but follow them and there's a bit of an optical illusion going on which gives them the appearance of being twisted. I think it's the solid concertina thing - for stairs in a house that's fine but this sort of setting would probably have plates rather than a solid one piece zigzag.
Really well done though, the pic gives an impression of an atmosphere, like you know what it's like to be there, not everyone achieves that. Looking forward to the updated render. |

Thanks for the comments; I knew people would suggest grime! I'm going to have to look at MadMouse pictures....
WWotW - some useful points there; I was wondering if I'd overdone the 'light cones' a bit - first time I've used the 'advanced volumetrics' in TS5, only real previous volumetric experience was the simpler form in TS4.3, but I think you're right and I should tone them down a bit. Didn't really want to go for an over dirty feel...
Interestingly, on the stairs, I know they're a bit unusual but they're actually based on a real life design metres from where I sit in my office. Wanted something relatively light and 'transparent' so they didn't obscure too much whilst still adding a slightly unsual aspect and breaking up the image a bit. Not sure I get the twisting aspect but will look again after the holidays with fresher eyes!
Thanks Jamesmc - didn't really think about Art Deco when I was working on it, but it is a style I like.... I kind of started by just roughing out lots and lots of pipe runs all over the place and let it take me whereever it went... Not sure I'm going to put any more pieps in now though - best part of 10MB of geometry thanks to all the SDS! |

I don't know what you want to show in your picture.
Is it reality or atmosphere?
I am working in the chemical industry, and so I want to mention some
of my thoughts.
I am talking about reality:
Maybe use different colors for different tubes.
That's for security. We use green for water and red for steam.
Some markers on the wall and on the containers.
All your objects seem to have the same material.
Maybe use black for the double t-beams.
The steps don't need the vertical parts.
The horizontal parts of the steps could be grids.
You need a foot guard on the floor.
I hope you understand my strange english. |

Hi Nez,
I like it a lot. The row of lamps leading to the back with that walkway give a great sense of depth together with the stairs in front. Well done! The atmosphere is there with the volumetric light. Beacuse of your composition the 3 bent pipes in the back become a center of interest. To me these are not the greatest because they do not follow the same curve. You may consider making a door there, perhaps opened, with some suggestive light...
I suggest not to overdo it on the dirtying because it may distract.
