Being a NOOB with ts7.51 and 3d modeling in general. I tend to refer to the manual quite often.-----READ " I Keep It Open On My Other Screen " HERE----- :) Never being quite shure what chapter, what i'm looking for is in. I use Adobe Reader to search the multiple PDF files in the manual at one time. It would be helpful if all the PDF files were titled properly. If i owned Adobe Acrobat i would do it my self. Alas that software i do not have.

To see what i'm talking about; Open Adobe Reader; click search ; check the: all PDF documents in (check box ); then browse for the folder your manual is in; in the word or phrase box type in " the "( without the quotation marks ) and hit search. This will pull up all the seperate chapter PDF files.

Thank You

I believe that I ran into the same problem - I had to go into the actual Windows directory where TS is, then pick 'ts' then 'pdfman' subdirectory, lft click hold, or rt click to select 'rename', so that I could rename the file to something that I would remember.

Hope this helps,

rf

I'm sorry, that wasn't too clear - I renamed each PDF file in the PDFMan subdirectory: ch1.pdf became ch1-IntroTutorials.pdf, ch2.pdf became ch2-UserInterface.pdf - etc., changing each PDF to it's Starting page title. There, that's a bit more clear. You don't need Acrobat to change file names :)

Again, Hope this helps,

Thanks rrf that helped for chapters 1,4,6,7 & 11 which dont have titles embeded in the PDF document. Unfortunately chapters 8,9,10 & 12 have incorrect embeded titles and Adobe choses to use the embeded titles if the document has one. Chapters 2,3 & 5 have an embeded titles that are correct. I guess most folks do not rely on an index as much as i do when i'm learning something. :(

gonegrey you are definitely not alone I've been complaining about a lack of a proper index in just about every thread where the manual comes up! As I have said previously I don't own another piece of software which doesn't have an index for its manual. Its a massive oversite and so far I've yet to see Caligari offer an explanation.

Obviously I'm not speaking for Caligari but I suspect the explaination is fairly simple. The manual as it is now is still a work in progress and it's being continuously updated. Any index would therefore become obsolete as soon as any further updates were added to trhe manual. So rather than put time and effort into an index that would almost immediately be rendered incorrect I suspect Caligari are focusing on updating the manual itself.

I feel your pain though - I grew up indoctrinated to use indexes and sorely miss having one for tS. The only solution I can offer is to take the time to read the entire manual from cover to cover so you gat a sense of it's overall layout. You will find that subjects are grouped fairly logically and related subjects are grouped together which makes locating the info you want a little easier.

Whilst this is a little frustating and time consuming it has worked OK for me - though obviously not as well as having a finalised complete manual with a finalised complete index. Given the nature of software development I suspect that we will never actually see a completed manual as such. This is what is called progress!! ;)

I am using Acrobat Reader 6.0 (by choice) and find I cannot do searches in the TS 7.51 pdf. Does anyone else have this problem?

Having no Index is ridiculous! My gut tells me their waiting until the rest of the chapters are done. It needs to be ameliorated...learned that from W!zard!!!

Steinie,

I've got 6.0.05 - just tested on 7.51 ch11 (arbitrary pick) and search works fine...

Of course you can do a pdf search within Acrobat - I know that and I would be satisfied with that if there was only 1 pdf document involved. Its not always obvious in which chapter the relevent info is going to be found.

Burnart,

Sorry this wasn't sooner, just checked this thread....I have a 'work-around' for this PDF search problem (I think) When I got the Manual, I grabbed all the PDFs and copied them to their own directory on my desktop - I wanted to print them and have quick access to them, so that when I searched within Acrobat reader, it gives me the option to search within a directory and folder. Because they're all in one folder, whatever I search for comes up in the list no matter what chapter it's in.

I hope that helps,

rf

Glad to see im not the only one that was taught how to use indexes (thanks W!ZARD ). This IMO is a simple problem to fix. Simply update the internal document titles in the chapter pdf files, and the problem is solved. No need to change the manual package structure. That way us index fogey's can use Adobe to search and have our index clues like we're used to.

@Steinie: The way i search the all the files (i'm useing Reader 7.0 ) is; Open Adobe reader, click the search icon, a dropdown list box appears, near the bottom of the list is a browse for location choice, click on that & browse for the folder your manual is in, highlight it . It will search that folder & all sub-folders. then enter what your searching for and click the search button. It eaven searches the light works pdf files, which are in a differant subfolder than PDFMan folder. hope this helps
