I stared out with modeling a cabin for a bit of a background image and than I modeled a tree using a cone for the main stem/trunk and then drew a transparency map and put it on planes for the branches, I had some trouble with finding a way to make snow look good on the tree. Besides the background I came across a slite problem, I don't really have a plot for my seen yet! I'll come up with somthing but in the mean time I'm trying to set myself up so I have a good start when one comes to me. this is what i have so far. |

Welcome eagles42mcb if you are new to these forums. Nice to see you participate. Is this entry for the "Journey's End" Challenge or the December Caligari Monthy Gallery?
You have a nice start with the cabin. What I would suggest first to improve your image is to make things a little less too perfect. Each log of the cabin could taper slightly and give it variation. You could add variation with texturing the logs differently too. On the roof you could even point edit to change the peak and give it some roundness to suggest snow on top.
It's great to have you join us. |

Cool scene. Which render engine are you using? If LightWorks then right click the Shadow icon for your lights (Top icon on the lights central panel) - another panel will open called 'Shadows' - left click the second icon (Shadow Transparency) and select 'Transparent Shadows' from the fly out icons.
Transparent shadows do take a little longer to render but should cast much better shadows through your Alpha cones.
Hope This Helps

Cool style Eagles42mcb.
The image makes me want to go inside the cabin to get warm and cozy. |

thanks for the shadow tip! I tried to point edit the snow and the texture wigged out on me. the cabin does look to "perfect" as in cartoonis and not realistic so I'm gona try to fix that, I've been short on time to work on it this last week. thank you for the advice and tips though. |

Welcome eagles42mcb
Nice cabin. Will love to see how the tree snow works out for ya. I'm short on any technical help so far for this as I'm in a learning stage myself, but am watching to see how you finally handle the snow |

Hey eagle nice to have you along the journey..hopefully it won't end...bad pun..I know..any way if you are looking for a way to make the ground terrain look less flat you can do what these guys on here taught me. Quad divide the plane several times then point edit sections you want to raise up and raise them to make hills. Then use Sub-divison surfaces to make the nice and rounded...that way you can have nice smooth rolling terrain. Hmm will have to think about the snow on the trees though..look nice so far though. |

Try adding an alphamap to your texture with some sort of grime. Just add a layer of texture that is grime, and do an alpha-transparency. See if that makes it look better. |

So I tryed to make the snow on the trees better but I'm still not compleatly satisfied but I'm running out of time so I think I'll leave them at that. I made a mountian for the BG and tryed the give it a snowing affect by putting a couple layers of transperent planes with some snow flakes on them. well I'm leaving for mexico this week so I'll catchback up with you after then. |
