Hello everyone! This is my first post here. I have a question, but first I think I should describe what I did:
I currently have Truespace 4.3
I made a model in another 3d modeling program other than Truespace. Using that software program, I UV mapped, textured, and exported the model. I exported it in the Wavefront Object format (.obj). I opened the model in Truespace 4.3. When I load the UV mapped texture using the material editor, I apply the material to the model, and the model shows up all black. (Even when I render the scene, the model is just black, and doesn't have the colors I painted in the UV map.) The colors do show in the material editor though.
My Question:
How can I fix the problem with the UV mapped materials as in my description above?
Thank you everyone in advance. This forum looks really nice and friendly.

It sounds like one of the following...
1)the bitmap is an unsupported type(not likely)
2)trueSpace cannot find the specified bitmap(likely)
for #1...just open the image in an image editor and save to a supported format.
for #2 open your material editor.
click on the color swatch.
if it is blank/black click inside the image window and navigate to the directory where the image resides.
re-apply texture...
I hope that helps..
Alternately the diffusion and/or specular could be off and may need adjustment. |

Two other things to check also:
Make sure you have some active lights in your scene otherwise your objetc will appear black regardless of whether it has a texture or not (may be obvious, but can be easily to accidentally delete the lights...)
Did you import the obj using the Luuv plug-in? This tends to be more reliable method for importing objs into truespace? Pretty sure you can get it for TS4.3, but can't remember whether the option existed to load objs through the file menu as in TS5 (which doesn't work as well as Luuv). |

I dont think tS native OBJ import handles the UV map, which is why the object is black (it doesnt know how to apply the texture at any point on the model, so it all shows up black). The LUUV plugin handles this though, but I don't know if a version exists for tS4 or not. The plugin has been included with tS since version 6 or so.
Without that plugin, I think you will need to re-map the UV in tS itself, or use a third party conversion program to read the OBJ and save as COB. You might also try 3DS format, some people report success with that.

Checked back to a previous message I posted for the following link - you can download Luuv for TS4.3 at the following link if you don't have it already.

Thank you everyone for the help. I tried the Luuv plugin for truespace 4.3. Every time I load a model using Luuv, the model shows up with the UV mapped texture, then everthing but the mouse freezes up.
If anyone else has had the same problem, and knows how to fix it, any help will be greatly appriciated.
Thank you

You may have to wait a while for the program to become responsive - after getting the model in place, LUUV often then goes and redoes the grouping, which can take several minutes. This looks like a program freeze, as the mouse will move, the model will show, but no icons will highlight or do anything etc.
I'd try waiting 5 minutes or so, just in case this is an uber-complex model, and see if tS comes back to life - might be LUUV is just doing its thing!
