Hello fellow trueSpace geniuses;

I am still fairly new to trueSpace. I am working on a project in which my skills quickly ran out. I am hoping one of the experienced artists would be kind enough to provide some information.

I am trying to create a soccer ball. I started by trying to use an image to wrap around a sphere. A combination of not finding a GOOD image and my lack of UV mapping skills is not producing a good result.

I am beginning to wonder if it would be easier to create a truncated icosahedron, then simply paint the individual faces. Of course this raises the question, what would be the EASIEST way to create a truncated icosahedron?

Thank you and have a nice day!

Hi Barusa,

Which version of Truespace are you using?

Hmm.... I thought a geosphere might do it for you. But upon looking at a soccer ball I just realized that it has both 6 sided faces (the white ones) and 5 sided faces (the black ones). Don't think there's any easy way to model that.

One way would be to create all the faces as polygons (or cylinders and delete the faces you don't need) then move them into position and weld them together. Using a sphere or geosphere as a guide would probably help with the positioning.

Another way might be to use the polydraw tool and to draw the shapes onto an existing sphere and delete the edges that you don't need.

Each of those methods requires a lot of work though. Wow, who'dve though that a soccer ball would be so difficult to model!? :confused:

Here is an icosahedron truncated by an amount of 0.33.

Quickly made with MetaObjects plugin.

Remember though that the faces on a real football is rounded (not flat like this).

THANKS!!! That is exatly what I wanted. From a learning stand point, may I ask how you created it?

7.51 with Vray. Thanks Caligari for giving good deals when a new version is released.

I tried several of the ideas you mentioned, such as 'adjusting' a geosphere before I posted. As you propably found also, those methods created more of a mess than a good result. Thanks for trying to help.

:) well not much to it. Just some mouse clicks. I used MetaObjects (http://www.bendys.com/3d/metaobjects/metaobjects.html), found on the dePak (http://www.caligari.com/products/trueSpace/ts5/Plugins/Caligari/dePak/) cd.

Thanks for the information about the CD.

The object worked great for what I wanted to do. The following image is a draft version of the soccer ball. The texture is not quite perfect yet, but I am happy considering I have only spent about 30 minutes worth of effort.
