Soft Selection seems like a great tool for modeling, but it selects through to the back of the object so, for instance, if I use it to produce some eye sockets, it also pushes out bumps at the back of the head.

Question: is it supposed to work that way or is there a hidden checkbox for "select front surface only"? I note that all the examples concern mountain making, where the underside is not a problem.

Thanks for any clues.

Right click on the object to enter point edit mode. In Stack under the "Panels" tab you should see "Mesh Editor Settings" with a box labeled "Select Only Front Faces"
Edit: my answer is the hard way, WWitch is the easy way.

I struggled with similar selection problems until I discovered the old pop up settings box has now been incorporated into the toolbar. These two little icons will solve your woes:

Thank you very much! That was the answer. That button is labeled "Select Nearest Element" and I just didn't interpret it the right way when I read about it.
