I was making a series of corridors, and decided to put some sort of animal there to guard it for me while I'm away.

Yes. got it in one. For some reason, while I was making the corridors, I thought of the Munsters. |

It was a bit too dim for my taste, and the columns just blended in with the walls. AND the floor just didn't interest me. I think I need to put up a sign to beware of pet too.

I'd like to have one like him, Kena .. he's very clean.. :D I also like the marble effect against the rough stone walls..
If I may comment.. a somewhat yellower light might be nice? |

Why is the fog floating on the ceiling and why isn't the light making pretty patterns from the mirror ball?
TBH it all looks too bright for no apparant light source. The lighting in the first pic was much better and more atmospheric which lent much more depth to the pic. |

I liked the effect of the fog where it normally isn't... Made it look like dragon breath instead. And the "mirror ball" IS the light :D
Gotta figure out how to make it look more like a light... or more like it's emitting light. Any suggestions? |

It just looked odd to me and I certainly didn't get dragon breath from it. I think the problem is it's just plain flat. Fog/mist/dragon breath just isn't, it swirls and dances.
Gotta figure out how to make it look more like a light
Volumetrics or some fall off? I didn't realise it was the light source as it isn't 'glowing' in any way and there's no apparant light coming from it.
Hope that helps. |

problem with volumetrics is that it puts too much or too little fog in because these are omni lights... Maybe I will try adding lens flares when I get home tonight. |

Can understand you shying away from volumetrics. I hardly ever use them due to the additional render time. So, how abut giving the lights some sensible fall off then? Compare your first image, which has depth, to the latest, which is flat - try going for that sort of look with sensible fall off and maybe mapped shadows?
Lens flare is such an over used cliche and hardly ever looks necessary or correct, try to resist! :) |

I was thinking something a bit more subtle than the bright showy lense flares.
something like this

I also dimmed down the back-light a bit... It looks better, but I still need to tweek some. |

Gotta figure out how to make it look more like a light... or more like it's emitting light. Any suggestions?Hmm, I usually duplicate the object, scale it down a little so that it's inside the main object, turn up the ambient glow and transparency, and continue duplicating and scaling until you get the desired effect. HTH! |

I will have to try that.
As for the fog/smoke... Yep. I just looked at my old photos, and it looks just like the stuff I got when I burned something in the oven.
:jumpy:
I put some dirt on the floor, it reduced the shininess.

And brianalldridge, Haven't I seen you on the forums before? a looooong time ago? :D Welcome back.
EDIT: doesn't seem to work when the object is already perfectly clear

you can't have it perfectly transparent, it's more of a bright white color, try starting into a lightbulb for a while :p yeah, it's been since last march when I actually completed a piece... |

Oh, well. At least I know the technique for the next time.
I added a nice little sign to prevent anyone from suing me.

I need to move it. It's in the way.
EDIT: this is better.
