In the manual - 8.3.6 IK Handles and Locks, Advanced Tutorial - IK Groups

"An IK group is similar to defining a set of joints as being 'one big bone' - that is, the whole group may rotate at the ends, but the joints inside the IK group cannot rotate independently."

The example that follows, however, is of an arm moving freely while the IK group locks the back in place. Using "invert IK groups" locks the arm while the back becomes free.

But neither of these examples treats a group of bones as "one big bone" which can be moved. I would like to do that.

For instance, having set the position of hand, wrist, and elbow, I would like to move the whole arm a bit while these parts remain locked to each other but not locked in space, and I would like the trunk locked in place while I move the "one piece" arm.

Can this be done? Thanks for any clues.
