I did two similar tests. One with endorphin and truespace. One with endorphin and poser. Both use the same bvh file created in endorphin. I found working with Truespace was a little faster and funner. Had trouble keeping my character in car in poser. Truespaces anim track mixer really speeds things up. Faster than posers animation mixer for me. Poser wins points for importing BVH files from endorphin or other sources with no setting up in the character. So I did not have to place bvh skeleton and skin in Poser as I did in Truespace. Posers content of characters and content on the web is mind boggling. Truespaces realtime view and render direct to file was much faster for direct renders and Truespace had a easier workflow. Like working in realtime. I like both programs. Here are the two tests ...

So what if you use Poser to import the BVH, set up the character, and

then import it into TS for animation? Would that give the best of both?

I already have Poser, and have been wondering about using it together with TS.

Yes, That works great! I use Poser to import all my Bvh's from Endorphin or from Bvh's I get from the web. Then in Poser I made a TPOSE and saved it as a reusable TPOSE. Poser allows you to save all your Poses. So, on the first frame of my imported Bvh animations I import in to Poser I just click on that Tpose pose and instantly on all my first frames I have my Tpose. Then I export to Truespace. In Truespace the Bvh's come in beautifully with the first framed Tposed and ready to apply to my Truespace character. Poser will take in any Bvh from any source on the web and rescale instantly and as I mentioned instantly apply that Tpose to the first frame.
