The other night I was having a little with with a broken XBox controller and made a little robot that vibrates around the floor and my kids get a kick out of it. It's a pretty simple little design so I figured I would try to model it in trueSpace. I used a lot of duct tape though and was just wondering what the best way to go about making something like this is. It would have to bend around the motor and wires and things and of course have that texture. I could just take a picture and then use that as the material but I don't know how I would get the same effect. Considering the tape is wrapped around the wire hangar legs and all that fun stuff.

Attached are a couple of pictures of what I was thinking, it's pretty simple and rickety which is what I want the model to look like; dents and all!

ahah record a video lets see it in action. as far as making the duck tape bend i would say create a box thin place it over what you want it bent around add rings and then deform it untill it fits like in the picture?

That's what I was thinking too, but I'm going to have to dig around the manual to find out how to set objects to collide with each other.

I was also wondering if there was any kind of boolean operations in Workspace. I couldn't seem to find it so I had to go to model side, no big deal but I was just curious.

As for the video, haha, that would be fun. I'll have to try that out, unfortunately I didn't have any fresh batteries so it only lasted for a few minutes. I'll see what I can do when I get a new battery for it. Or maybe the thing is draining batteries faster than normal...I'll have to look at that too.

hah i hope u get a vid ill signature it aha.. and as for them colliding i don't think it would neccecerilly need it you would be zoomed in that far any way to move them down you would be able to seperate it from the little bump its covering easilly.. and also it wouldn't matter if it only went inside it a little bit would it ?

You're right, it wouldn't matter, it would just have to bow up a little bit.

no im not saying it wouldnt matter obviously im not a perfect perfectionist but you might be i don't wanna suggest something you wouldn't noramlly do some body might know a way to collide them but as for me being a scruffy modeler so to speak i would just let it go inside ahaha

Get a hessian type bump map for the texture and make your tape using a nurb plane with a few divisions...that way you can get flexibility without too many points to edit...:D

Nice, thanks Splinters, I didn't even think about using nurbs for any of it either, that should fit well with the way the tape is supposed to look. I think that I did find a good hessian texture too.
