Well it's probably wrong to approach this from the outside in.. but .. that's how it happened - I realize I'll most likely have to start over again, but......

In the image below... if you can spot the three smaller spheres.. I'd like to subtract the 'fat' cylinder from those three spheres, which would allow me to make interesting arched openings into the small spheres (the 'fat' cylinder, should then be gone)

I can't seem to do this in the workspace (is there a way?) and on the model side, I can't see what I'm doing.. I had not wanted to join the small and large spheres at this point.. must I? or is there maybe a way to assign materials so that I can see what I'm doing?

Advice and constructive criticism all welcome .. please and thanks! :p

Alas Butterpaw, there are no Booleans in Workspace yet...:(

Not sure what is going on there, does the tube cut through more than one sphere. Are the spheres booleaned together?

Why not turn solid edge mode display on and view from orthographic elevations to line it up?

Thanks.. I've been jumping back and forth from workspace to model space but used workspace as the only way I could get a image to show what I'm trying to do.

I wanted to boolean the spheres, but could not seem to do that for some strange reason..

I'll go back and play with this some more.

I guess I should have worked this out mathematically first, so I could build from inside out.. but was a bit lazy about working out the locations of the spheres.. :p (yeesh! can't get away with anything)

and on the model side, I can't see what I'm doing.

Put the objects that are obscuring your vision onto a different layer and turn that layer off to hide them while you work on the smaller balls.

Different layer.. hmmmm ... I didn't know about that.. (sure works for 2D projects) :D

thank you!

... searches for layers

Hi Butterpaw,

In a situation like the one you have there you might just do what I do, cheat.:p

I never did get booleans to submit to my imagination in trueSpace, so I looked around for many years until I found a program that could always do them in a snap with zero problems and zero artifacts. It's the only program I use for booleans now and it would handle this example here in a few seconds without a hitch... M.O.I. (moi3d.com).

Not only can you throw cylinders at it all day long without a complaint, you can throw multiple mangled pretzel shaped knots of lofted shapes at it and it still works without a hitch every time. When you're done, just export it as obj or 3ds for trueSpace import.

I'd love to be able to do them like that in trueSpace, but the reality is I've never been able to and don't have the time to bother trying anymore.

Cheat.... life's too short.;)

Hmmm, thanks 3dv Dude, ... I have that program, but was trying not to get myself too confused, being early days yet, ... but it bears consideration - if I do I might just be sneaky... <__< ...... >__> .... :D

At the moment I'm still trying to understand the process in trueSpace, so I'll play with it some more..

however:

Are there other primitives available? like equilateral triangular items and tetrahedrons? or settings? ... hmmm.. gotta go search again.. gah.. I get so tired... for Christmas I wants lotsa endergies :D

There is no way at the moment, you have to change to Modeler side.

- Build your scenery with spheres and cylinder

- change to Model side

- select all spheres (left click on all spheres while holding down Strg button)

- left click on Object Subtraction tool ( see arrow )

- now mouse pointer changes, click once on the cylinder

- go back to Workspace

Keep in mind that you should place your finishing materials or textures not before you are sure that you are done with Model side if you are using some of those that only work on Workspace side. In that case you will have to repaint. So be sure to keep a safe copy of all materials.

EDIT: The cylinder is already subtracted in the part showung the Model window view

Are there other primitives available?

Look in the libraries (both the Model side libraries and Workspace Libraries), I think there's extra primitives lurking around in those. Don't forget you can also change the primitive paramaters to alter each drastically from it's default. Try that, if you get one you feel you'd like to use more, save it to a library so that you can recall it for ever more.

Thank you Emma, that's a beautiful explanation, and I would like to apply it, but can't just yet. While your arrangement for subtracting the cylinder from the spheres is both elegant and effective, I know my spheres are not yet placed perfectly, so my result will be a bit out of kilter, and I'm going to have to fix that first. Lazy Butter heaves a big sigh

My brain, not having been exercised for a long time in any mathematics more complex than the most basic arithmetic, was not eager to apply itself to figuring out coordinates for the centers of my spheres in a tetrahedral array, and then do it all over again for the second smaller set as well, rotationally offset from the first. So, it occurred to me that maybe I could use a nice, perfectly rescalable tetrahedron as my tool to set the sphere centers. Not spotting one in my objects library, I thought, okay, I have a whole set of nice polyhedrons of varying complexity in 3D Canvas7, so I'll export them as .cobs, and import them into trueSpace, and convert them to the RsObj format, and have a nice little set of polyhedron objects (24 of them) to use as handy tools from that point on. Hah!

To my dismay, I discovered that neither tS7.51, nor tS6.6 likes that flavor of .cob - complaining that my .cobs are invalid. Probably doing something wrong, so I went back to look at the manual, but I'm not finding load object, but only load .. and... well, my results vary from those suggested.

I was just thinking that next I would try to export one polyhedron from 3D Canvas as a .3ds and see if I could import that into trueSpace (whichever version or side), when I decided to come and have a look here.

Well by this point, y'all may be having giggling fits at how hard I can work in order not to think mathematically :p

Okay, I just remembered I haven't eaten in ages, so I'm going to take a break and have something to eat.. I totally forgot to refuel. My fridge died day before yesterday, and I've had to throw away masses of food, and today (soonest I could drive again) spent too much time and far more money today than I care to think about on purchasing what I hope will be a sturdy, long-term replacement - but it's not arriving until Thursday.. so I might as well feast on what food I have that's still good. Sugar snap peas, blueberries, ground turkey.... cranberries? hmm well at least it will be colorful!

But that new computer seems further away than ever :o ...

Ah well, life's a merry-go-round - sometimes you get the ring.. sometimes you don't :D

Meanwhile, if you, or anyone else would care to tell me anything at all about this little modeling venture.. it's most welcome.. even if you just want to tell me I'm a bit dotty
.. (I knew that)

HaHaHaHa .. thanks WWOTW .. now I really do feel silly :D.

Although, I had looked and didn't spot what I wanted, I will look again, perhaps just missed them.. but....
food first!! :jumpy:

cheers, and thanks... (and I still want to figure out how to import things too) :p

Well I did figure out the export/import process. The problem with the .cob format being invalid, is still mysterious (maybe 3D Canvas using something out of date?) .. anyway I abandoned that, and went with exporting them as .3ds.

These imported perfectly into tS6.6 and then I could switch to ts7.51 model side, and save.. as RsObj, right into my prepared library - yay!

@Kate, I did look at the tS primitives options, and looks complex, but very interesting, so I'm going to delve further into that.. thanks!

Here's a little pic cobbled from snapshots (some not very sharp) taken in 3D Canvas7, of the polyhedron collection I imported - they're white, in my tS library.
