Currently, Caligari has a promo offer for trueSpace courses.

I have never seen a list of the best sequence to learn with these courses

so I thought I would write out the list and ask the members here to list their

recommended order for the fundamental and master courses.

I have listed them in alphabetical order. Using the numbers listed for each

group of courses, what would you recommend as a sequence?

First what version TS do you have? What is your plan for the future? What is your experience with 3D modeling so far?

MC or Master Courses would be next level courses.

No experience with interface?

18 "proTeam Spirit of the Interface Course" or 5 "proTeam Getting Started with trueSpace7 Course" or 19 "Start Your Dream"

If your purpose is scripting then: 3,7 and 14

Plans to learn older Modeler? (older version or version 6) then:4 and 10

What area you are interested will help you select the rest, example Animation=9,17 or MC2,MC8

Character Modeling 11,20,MC3

Architecture 12,MC1

Textures and Shaders:6,16,MC9

Also at bottom of page look for "Courses" where there are opinions too.

Thank you for your reply Steinie.

I have tS 7.5 and 6.6 and through my proteam membership and some

previous package purchases I have obtained all of them but only recently

have made the time to go through them and all the other content on this

website. I have searched through the entire site and I have not found

any recommended learning list.

The purpose of this post in the New User Section is to classify/sequence

the courses so that someone who has never been involved with trueSpace

and wants to get started can follow a study guide of progressively more

difficult courses.

Is this the sequence you would recommend? :jumpy:

Fundamentals Courses

---------------------------------------------------

Getting Started with trueSpace 6.6 (or previous version):

4 proTeam Getting Started with trueSpace 6.6 Course

10 proTeam NURBS Course

8 proTeam Procedural Animation Course

Advanced Character Modeling:

3 proTeam Character Modeling Course

Advanced Architecture:

1 proTeam Architecture Course

*******************************

Based on the groupings, is there a better sequence

to follow? For example, would "Basics of Scripting" be a more

difficult thing to learn than "Bascis of Architecture"?

*******************************

How should these these remaining courses be sorted?

After you get comfortable with the Interface, my personal favorite training courses are:

Introduction to 3D for 2D Illustrators Course

Introduction to Product Illustration Course

These are eye openers and will wake you up to the power of trueSpace.

They talk about layers, exporting to psd format (photoshop) modeling in 3D space with intimate detail on modeling techniques (making the light bulb), making the package.

It may seem like just an illustrators course, but trust me, tons of good information in these courses.

Those are a must buy imo, highly recommended.

I would think by looking at the descriptions your first course should be spirit of the interface, that seems to be a model side course and not worspace so it is not really a ts 7 specific course. I would probably leave scripting til last, that is a discipline all its own and probably the most complex.

Widgets is a customization of the program, I would leave it til last. You will be able to do all the courses with the default set up. Then you can customize your own workflow later. Maybe put rendering emotions directly after texture creation, because those focus on the artistic side. I would try designing with nurbs right after the basic nurbs course while it is fresh in your brain and it will reinforce it. I would do the hdri course after texture creation followed by the vray course, hdri shows 6.6 and vray is 7. Multipass I would do after hdri and vray. The music machine and illustrating last maybe even after scripting because those are specialized technique. I am no expert, just looking at the descriptions and making a suggestion.

Many thanks to everyone for your feedback so far. Suggestions, comments

(constructive or otherwise) are most welcome.:jumpy:

I am looking for more comments from everyone (even the peanut gallery)

on what course to sequence at which position. My goal is to make a

progression so a newbie could start at Course 1 (easiest) and progress to

Course 31 (most difficult), following different subject groups and skipping

those items which do not interest them.

Based on all the feedback so far, here seems like a curriculum that could

prove useful in learning trueSpace. Please see the Acrobat PDF Attachment

for this list properly formatted with notes.

A trueCurriculum;)

NOTES:

FC = Fundamentals Series Course

MC = Masters Series Course

The "Version" refers to which version of trueSpace it was produced for:

6.6 = pre-trueSpace version 7.0

7+ = post-trueSpace version 7.0

If it was produced with a version prior to version 7.0 then you could use the

"MODEL" workspace/Space 3D of version 7 or greater to follow the course.

Please note that as of version 7.5 the new name for the workspace/Space 3D

that was called "PLAYER" (which you will see in some tutorials) has been

changed to "WORKSPACE".

If you own a version of trueSpace prior to version 7.0, then you should be

able to follow most of the courses listed as 6.6. Please contact Caligari prior

to purchasing to ensure compatibility.

Wow...

First off, let me say Thank Yopu to Jake for asking these questions and putting together the curriculum described above. I've had TS 6,6 for ages, purchased a good while back with a package that included all of the training courses available at that time, which includes the Fundamental and Master courses. I've recently updated to 7.5 - and I've never dared to really try to learn this program. Crazy, huh? Yeah, buy 6.6, don't learn it, then update to 7.5? That's me - a program collector, very expensive habit!

But one thing that has kept me from diving in is simply not knowing what order to go in with the tutorials. So I find this very halpful, and will be one more excuse out the door - lol, I might actually give TS a try this time!

I have just one question about the tutorials. I don't have the more recent TS 7 tuts, though I did purchase Getting Started with TS7 when it came out. I was looking at the special for purchasing the 12 TS7 Courses - but I am finding it difficult to figure out which videos exactly are included, as when I look at the page with the TS 7 courses, there are more than 12.

In fact, some of them have the same title as my earlier Courses - Nurbs, Organics, Polygonal, etc. My question is this - are these included in the TS 7 list because they are generic enough to be useful, or have they been re-adapted to the 7.5 interface?

What I am really asking here is, do I need to re-download them, or ask for them to be "reset" if they have been updated to TS 7 versions? Or are they simply the same videos I already have?

Thanks for any info, and thanks again to Jake! I've downloaded the pdf you made and will use it as a guide - adapting it to any personal preferences, of course. ;)

I have most of the courses listed and anything with a "7" would help you. The other videos are on the old 6.6 side and you probably already have them. For example trueSpace 7.5 wordSpace doesn't have nurbs yet. Anything with a "6" is the old stuff, nothing wrong with them but won't show you something new.
If you like the old side the list below will help you decide by area of interest.

Hi Judee3d and Steinie,

Thank you both for your comments.

I have all of these courses as part of my proTeam membership and previous

package deal purchases.

As far as I can tell (and I only started doing ACTUALLY doing the courses,

same reason as you :) and same software junkie habit :D ) , none of the

courses have been updated since they came out at the time.

Let me try to answer your question this way. It doesn't matter as much

which tools the courses uses to complete the task, what it will teach you

is how to complete a task. The main difference to new user between v6.6

(or less) and 7.0 (or more) is buttons you press/click to make the software

do something. Not everything has been transfered from Modelspace (tS6.6

environment) to Workspace (tS7 environment). I know there are many

new and wonderful features in tS7 over tS6.6, but for many new users,

just creating a pretty cube attached to a sphere is quite an accomplishment.

Which buttons to press I think is well explained in the manuals (and the

new videos in tS 7.5 manual), but the courses teach how to create content

with those tools.

So with that preface my answer would be yes all the courses, including

your old one will help you because they are supposed to go beyond the

manual's HOW-TO format for teaching the software and show you how to

make the images in your mind into the images on your screen. The difference

is that you will work on the Modelspace enviroment for some courses

and the Workspace (new/improved) environment for newer courses.

Oh and Judee3d, once you get into the courses, if you have some suggestions

on a better sequence of learning. I am very open to change (although my

girlfriend might dispute that ;) )

As new courses come out I hope to revise the "trueCurriculum" :)

Thanks, Jake,

Yes, I definitely intend to look at all of these - I agree many of them seem to be guides on how to go from ideas to accomplishments - if the interface has changed, I can adapt to that. The main thing is learning and then being able to product results from that learning.

It looks like a good curriculum to me, but I'll be sure to let you know if I find that some may need to come before others.

I am really glad I got these - at least, the ones I do have. I'm one of those who learns much better if I have a visual example in front of me - with verbal input is even better. But I get impatient with "written" tuts. They may be easier to follow in some ways, but I like to see it in action, I guess.

Thanks again, and Happy Holidays!

according to the wayback machiene (http://web.archive.org/web/*/http:///www.caligari.com/products/trueSpace/ts5/Courses/start_dream.asp?Cate=Fundamentals) it was last available in November 2007, but it's not available now. It was for Truespace version 6, so maybe that is why it was taken out.

For getting started with the new workspace and it's tools, the very first course I'd recommend is Jack's Workspace Organics Modeling (http://www.caligari.com/products/trueSpace/ts5/Courses/WorkspaceOrganicModeling1.asp?Cate=Training&Subcate=Fundamental).

It shows where the tools are and what they do and demonstrates a workflow for using the new workspace.

The original 'Getting Started' course was for TrueSpace 6.6 and doesn't cover the new workspace.

ah ok. thanks for the follow up.

it is planned to move every feature from model to workspace some day? it seems almost (i mean absolutely no offense to the developers or users/testers) kludged in there, like an after thought -- hey workspace is awesome, oh crap, deadline, now we have to do something -- ah! let's put 6 in as a plugin :)

the ultimate test for plugin architecture lol, embedding your entire previous version inside the new one.

i can see benefits, i'm just wondering because as a new user this is perhaps THE most confusing (and needlessly so) part of getting used to truespace. there is a lot to swallow on it's own without understanding/learning the idiosynchrocies and quirks of a massive version overhaul.

i'm not complaining, please dont think i am, i'm just concerned because if i find it difficult others must as well. :)

no simple task regardless of which 'side' you're on. i like them both tbh.

Yes. The only reason we have the Model space is to have something to work with on those things that have not been ported over to Workspace yet. Basically, you have two programs in one here. Version 6.6 (Model) and version 7.6 (Workspace)
They decided to do it that way so they can make TS 8 a whole different program and still provide updates while they worked on it.

Also for people who are relatively new to 3D modelling, the TS6 course is brilliant. I've always avoided UV mapping but I just watched the 6 course recently and it makes more sense now...still freaks me out though.

Jack's organics course is great for getting to grips with point editing in workspace.

I originally started with the south park reloaded course which is brilliant fun. the first model I actually ever made was a Stan fron the course.

Even if you are not planning to use the model, the older courses are fairly relevant wrt learning techniques.

The start your dream course was assembled from chapters from other courses as a good overview of various things, and that is why it is not available on its own - you have everything it contained though since you have access to all the courses now :)
