I have been following a Justin Barrett turorial to (mirror) model a head and it is occasionally suggested to click on the "Add SS" button for a glance and then "Remove SS" and return to work.

But suddenly, the "Add SS" button seems to only effect parts of the head and not the rest. In this case it seems to not effect the lower face, end of nose, back of head or very top ridge. It was working fine a while ago. I can't figure what I did to change it. I don't know if this is my error or a file corruption or what. The image below is with 3 clicks of the "Add SS".

Thanks for any clues.

i've never seen that before, are you sure you haven't selected the top half of the model?

If you haven't then remove the sds that you put on it and the mirror-modeler switch to the model side, add a layer of sds, take it off and go back inti the workspace and see if that works.

I've had that problem too, by acidentally selecting only part of a model and then adding SDS. Can't figure out a way to fix that. But Jayr, doesn't that destory the construction history on the model?

John, Where is that tutorial? I'd like to try it. Also, I love your layout, care to share? Looks a bit more efficient than the default Workspace layout.

Thanks,

Ed

Ed and jayr,

Ed, the link below will take you to Justin's webpage where you can download the turorials for both the layout, which is free (he calls it "interface" - it's near the upper left on the page). The only thing he doesn't mention is to double click on the top of the 3D window to expand it and completely hide the stack and all other windows, then double click again to get to the stack on occasion. Also, I keep my monitor set to the highest resolution, which makes toolbars and buttons quite small and leaves more room for the image. But the layout is Justin's. It's a great tutorial which teaches you how to do it. I saved it as "Justin's Layout".

The modeling tutorials (a little lower down on his page) are so cheap, and so good, you should not hesitate. (Thanks again to jayr for the link).

Meanwhile, thanks jayr, but I am ashamed to say that I failed to save and the program crashed, so now I will have to wait til it happens again before testing your idea. But I know it wasn't that some things were selected and others not. I tested for that and turned off the mirror and back on. No good.

Not a big problem, since I am practicing building these heads several times until I can do it from memory without Justin's tutorial. So we'll see.

to be honest that technique is described at several points in justin's tutorial (going over to model side, applying sds...e.t.c.), can't really take credit for that one. It's from doing that tutorial myself i thought it might work.

jayr, I finally did get to the part of the tutorial where Justin does that, and it is the answer. The problem did occcur again and that was the cure.

I now think the problem occurs when I "add ss" to just a part of the model, then leave edit mode without removing ss. Since I started avoiding that, it hasn't happened again.

Another pattern: If I am in edit mode when I switch over to model side to add and remove ss, the model disappears and isn't visible when I return to the workspace side. And the visibility control doesn't fix it.

Thus: always remove ss from parts before exiting edit mode and exit edit mode before switching to model side.

And try to remain calm at all times. I'm still having trouble with the mouse and keyboard while my fingers are crossed.
