Just wanted to say hi all.

This is my first post on the tS forums.

Here's a brief history of how I got here:

My first experience with 3d was cad-3d on an old

Atari ST computer.

Next I ended up with an Amiga 500 and Imagine 2.

BTW... that's what my silly avatar was made with.

That little guys been with me for years!

Next was an old Pentium 90MHz system and trueSpace/SE.

I think i paid $100 for the boxed version....

had lots of fun for a couple of years....untill

I found an issue of PC Format with a full version of

tS 2 on it.... this is the version I've used the most.

most of 2000 up till about last year. granted i used it off

and on. Lost interest a couple of times.

Then an offer on caligari's web page got my attention last year,

tS3 for FREE!

And now just this past week they sent me an email for trueSpace 5.2

plus the architecture and nurbs courses for $50 on CD!!!

And it came in the mail today.

the bad news! yes there is some.

I'm lost! The jump from tS3 to tS5 has been really difficult for me.

the material editor is soo different... i know it's better, but

I'm sure you're gonna hear a lot of repeat questions from me.

Great!

I was working on a scene in ts3 before I upgraded to ts5.

I had some decent looking sea water in my scene.

Stupid me uninstalled ts3 and somehow delete a texture/picture file

from my scene.

So now my nice looking sea looks like a big fat ugly white plane!

Please help!

So I guess my question is: How do I make realistic water in tS5?

Thanks

-rick

I found a save of the render. i was pretty happy with my tS3 water.

I don't mind learning new tricks.

Welcome to the forum.
A search for tS5+water on the old forum archive (where you'll probably find the most relevant tS5 stuff) turned up 300+ pages.
Here's one hit to get you started (http://forums.caligari.com/discus/messages/1584/18759.html?WednesdayMay1820050643am).
To search the old forum archive yourself, go here. (http://forums.caligari.com/scripts/discuscgi/board-search.cgi)
I'll also sneak in a shameless plug for my tutorial roundup. (http://www.spacekdet.com/tutorials/)
About the time your eyes fall out of your head from all that reading, that's when you fire up tS and get to playing.

Howdy rickl! Welcome to the forums. My trueSpace path is very similar to yours, except that I started with Real3d on my A500. :)
The tS interface did change quite radically in tS5, but once you get used to it, I think you'll like it better; I sure did. :)

Now how did he do it? I guess you guys are right. I'll just have to fire up tS

and play around...

most people use a bump map. There is a good one in the following thread:

http://forums1.caligari.com/truespace/showthread.php?t=2231

Since you don't have 6.6 - here is that water bump map

I think I used the "orange" bump map in tS3 to made decent looking ocean

water.

Thanks for the bump map picture. I had a heck of a time figuring out how to attach it in tS5 as a bump map. I ended up with a night time looking scene.

Another thing that's so different from tS3 is all the render options in the upper

right corner. I wish my order came with the manual too. I know there's .pdf's

of it on the CD. But I wish Caligari had an offer to pay a little bit more for the real thing.

Don't thank me, thank GraySho. He provided the bumpmap.

Your render looks very good. Up the Lumonisity if you want a sunnier ocean. change your reflectance shader to Caligari Phone, and you can even add some transparency.

I know what you mean by the difference in where to render. I jumped form TS4 to TS6. It was a bit difficult at first.

I decided to keep the scene night time.

I showed the picture to a friend of mine that's in the Navy.

He really liked it. He asked me to put a carrier ship in it.

Well my modeling skills are not that good. So I found

a lightwave model of a frigate on one of my old

lightrom CD's. Put that in the scene.

Changed the lights and the specular color of the clouds.. and

here's what i came out with. I think it might be time to move on

to a new project.:D

thanks for all the help.... see you all in another thread.
