Sometimes a bunch of objects in the scene editor appear with an x'ed out gray box. I cannot re-assign them to a layer. Even if I turn off all layers, these objects remain visible. Then later, sometimes, they will show up on a layer so I can turn them on and off. I can't figure out what the gray box means or how to re-assign these objects to a proper layer or why the gray boxes come and go on their own. None of the objects are glued.

Thanks for any clues.

You can re-assign any object with by right clicking the object (arrow icon)
which will open the object info dialog box.

Then choose the layer you want to assign the object to.

Thanks, jamesmc

That worked. To make it work, though, I found that I needed to close the scene editor and reopen it to see the changes - as if it was not updating itself automatically.

Thanks again.

There is a refresh button in the KFE toolbar.

However, I don't manage layers through the KFE, it is way too slow. The best way to assign an object to a layer is Jamesmc way : via the Object Panel.

For object management, you should consider using piScene tool : an alternative scene tree plugin. And for Layers management, the best tool is RSLayers.
