there is a very quick and painless way, but I'm not sure it will work with 5.2

I know the first one is for 4.0 but the basics are still there.

Look this one (http://www.spacekdet.com/tutorials/loft_rail_tut/) over too.
That other one is ancient.

Another painless way is to work with bones. Make an divided cylinder in needed length and give it a skeleton. In that way you are not bound to the final shape and you can modify it until you are satisfied.

When you use the standard bones for that and you are satisfied with the result, simply click the "split into hierarchical and IK linked branches". This makes the skeleton disappear, and leaves just the deformed cable mesh.

Make a box.

Scale the box as small as you can.

Extrude from the end of the box by selecting that face, and then the extrude tool.

Make the wire as long as you want.

Then use subdivision serface tool to change box shape wire into round wire.
