I made a barrel out of three parts: Hoops, body, and top (though hoops appear as separate pieces, they are actually one piece connected inside of barrell).

I glued them together so I could save as a single object. The result in workspace is that the body and top are pure black - so I can't see shadows on them and can't use the UV projection tools.

OK, so I made a copy and unglued the three parts. Now I can see the texture in workspace, but the parts now render as black in VRAY.

In the JPG below, the left barrel is unglued, the right is glued. The overlay is the VRAY render. More and more it is looking like TS and VRAY are like Abbott and Costello.

But maybe I don't understand something. Thanks for any clues.

Just guessing, but V-Ray may not be able to distinguish that your grouped object is holding different materials. If the (what appears to be a wood material) on the left is not a V-Ray shader it will show up black.

If the barrel is an imported object, the diffuse may be too dark, because it was material zoned in another application.

Vray can do textures no problems, but for render outputs, it needs Vray materials/shaders only.

I would take it to WorkSpace side and do an encapsulation rather than grouping and see if it still happens - but it appears that the wood texture on the barrel is not a Vray Shader/Material and it won't show up on render.

I agree with James this is definitely a bridge material issue. And Model side groups are not totally compatible with Workspace, so like James mentions do your "Encapsulate in 3D" on the Workspace side to keep the groups Workspace safe.

Couple things to try after getting the groupings right is re-applying the materials. Try each Workspace and Model side and see if it makes a difference.

If that fails you can turn the bridge off and go inside the brick for the object down to the material level and delete all the material bricks connected to the "material list manager" in the object. Then when you reselect the sub object (barrel/rings) and apply the material from Workspace side it should apply correctly.

Thanks for the suggestions. You are right. I found if I eliminated all textures, then re-applied them, then encapsulated rather than glued, as suggested, the problem went away and I could see textures in both workspace and VRAY render.

It's so crazy, it just might work!
