From tutorials by jhowell and Stevebe, I have learned to animate the opacity of an object (very neat - thanks to them), however I animate using VRAY and I find that VRAY does not see a lowered opacity - it renders at full opacity no matter what the setting for either the scene opacity or the object attributes opacity.
Does anyone know if VRAY can be pursuaded to render partial (or no) opacity?
Thanks for any clues. |

Render the material or texture in the ALPHA Channel? |

Depending on your shader you could also animate the transmissive property of your material. |

Thanks, I am trying that. I can get the ALPHA channel to show in the Keyframe panel, but then I can't change it for animation. If I click on the object to change the ALPHA, the ALPHA disappears from the keyframe panel. I can't seem to keep it there while I change it. Also, if I create a keyframe at one ALPHA, then change the ALPHA for a second keyframe, the first keyframe marker doesn't remember the ALPHA - it renders at the new ALPHA setting. |

I made a first keyframe while object was opaque, then a later keyframe when object was transparent, but now they both are rendering as transparent.
I have tried to export the alpha into the keyframe panel by the same methods as described by jhowell and Stevebe for exporting the opacity, but can't get it to work at all, let alone in VRAY, where I need it. |

UPDATE
I have just discovered that the animation in my program is not working at all, so until that is repaired, my experiments are useless. I start with a new scene, make a simple object, set keyframes for movement, and when I play it back, nothing happens - object just sits there in whatever was the last position it was in. Doesn't return to starting keyframe.
Not sure what to do. Re-install? Thanks for any advice. |

Hi johnhoward,
Well I think I'll let jhowell answer this one.......... J/K, he's doing a great job
writing tutorials and now I feel bad about hounding him.:o
Anyways, here's a video of the process, sorry no sound, it makes the vid. size too large.
As an alternative to a re-install, you can choose Reset to default content,
that may fix things up but be warned you will loose some settings and may
have to re-load some Libraries in the library browser. |

SteveBe,
Thank you very much. The "Reset to default content" command did fix the problem, with no trouble.
And your video proves that Vray does animate transparency, for which I have some definite uses, so thanks for that. However, since this is the planet earth, I ran into another problem trying to duplicate your procedure. When you are drilling down in the link editor, in your step 3, you find a "Material Chunk" folder with an orange square to click on.
I only find this folder in my 4th step and it has no orange square to click on (see screen shot).
Nevertheless, I can drill down to the transparency as you do, but then I find that the green snaky link won't connect to the side. The red dot developes a white dot in it, but the link just disappears.
Any idea what I am doing wrong? |

Switch from Artist aspect to Developer aspect and you should now see the wires. |

Thanks TrueBlue,
That made the wires visible. However, when I connect them all up so the default expanded view of the sphere shows the alpha, it does not seem to have any effect on the sphere. I still can only change the alpha in the transparency panel (and it won't animate from there). Also, the sphere panel in the stack is blank - the alpha does not show there either, and that is where SteveBe was controlling the Alpha for animation purposes.
I suspect these failures are related to the material chunk folder which I can't seem to get into (see my previous post above). |

In your screen captures you do show the Material Chunk. Look at the Titlebar's name after you enter a given object. |

Thanks again, TrueBlue,
You are quite right. Only the word "Material" showed, so I thought I was not in the Material Chunk folder.
And now everything is working. Thanks much to all. I just completed a VRAY animation of an object becoming invisible. Very Neat. |

I notice if you use the Material Editor to paint with your new Alpha settings the wires will get disconnected. I also notice that the D3DView does not reflect the changes unless you do use the Material Editor. But if you render with Vray it does render correctly. Here is a Sphere made just like Steve has shown and it is animated. Scrub through the Animation and render various frames with Vray. |

I don't know anything, but I'm a "Senior Member" using the Developer's tab. Is there no respect for language here?
One last question: when I switch from Artist tab to Developer tab in the LE, do I need to wear a tie?
Attached is my little VRAY experiment. I finally figured out to use transparent shadows so they disappear too. You're right TrueBlue, results only show in VRAY, not workspace.
Thanks again for all the help. |
