I own a bunch of the Caligari tutorials about TS 7 that I want to watch on a portable DVD player. It doesn't play them because they are in WMV format. I have a conversion program named "Super" which could convert the format to another. What would be the best plan of action? The player doesn't handle DivX.

I recently had a similar problem and found PocketDivxEncoder which I found ideal, you can download it here :-

http://www.videohelp.com/tools/PocketDivXEncoder

It will encode to Xvid format which in my case was fine,if that does'nt work I'm sure there will a solution here :-

Click on the second bottom link on the above page because it leads to version 3.96 which is the latest.

BTW it is free

The tutorials I purchased won't play on my Vista computer because they are searching for an audio codec.

Don't know which one it could be.

Anyone know? The video I can get to play in Camtasia studio, but no audio.

Heck, even Adobe Premier with its 10 zillion codecs won't play the WMV file tutorials because it's says it's damaged or bad format.

I've downloaded several times to make sure it wasn't corrupt.

It's a Windows Media Voice codec if memory serves me rightly, that can't be found or used on Vista. It only affects about 2 or 3 courses, and on the release of Vista, we dropped that particular codec setting.

Unfortunately I do not know of any solution to getting the audio to play on Vista, that I can recall. There are some "Media Player Classic" packs that might do the trick, I did test them at the time, but I forget if they were succesful in playing that codec in Vista or not.

You could also try this:
http://ffdshow-tryout.sourceforge.net/
I'm using the 32-bit version at the moment and not having any problems, but they are actively developing a native 64-bit version.

Also Vegas would be very good for re-encoding to DVD format. Keep in mind you're going to take a serious quality hit because you're re-encoding something that's already been compressed with a lossy format. And unless you plan to record to BlueRay or HD and are watching on an HDTV, you're likely going to take a resolution hit as well. If I remember correctly regular DVD format is 720x480...

Okay, found the solution, perhaps it will help others with Windows Vista or Win Media Player that can't play the file, here's the codec.

Per the Microsoft help, I clicked on the find on web and it eventually led me to this web page. (I'll leave out all the middle Web Pages and jump straight to the source)

Both audio and video files play now. :)

One problem I'm finding is when converting WMV to any other format the size of the file quadruples.

Another snag is that some of the later tutorials use Shockwave. Can these be converted so that I can play on a portable DVD/CD player?
