I make a simple 6-sided box and texture it with a photo made for it.
Then I go to the UV editor to fit the box to the photo and I find 2 sides, not six (1st JPG below). I move one of the sides and find a third side hidden under it (2nd JPG below).
On other days, I find four sides with none hidden beneath.
On other days, I find four with two hiden beneath (a lucky day - I can at least deal with that).
Why do I not always find six sides laid out in some sort of logical pattern?
Any clues very greatly appreciated. Thanks. |

Much depends on which default UV projection you use. If your cube has a Planar UV projection applied you will get a different result in the UV editor than if your Cube had a Cubic UV projection applied.
Imagine a slide projector projecting a square image straight down on top of the cube. Both the top and bottom faces of the cube will be at right angles to the projector ansd so the image will be mapped correctly on those faces. The side faces however are at right angle to the projector and so the image does not translate correctly.
A cubic projection applied to a cube is in effect like having six separate projectors shining their square images (all the same image) at right angles to each face.
The UV editor is designed to show these 3d projections in a 3d space - hence the seemingly odd results in the editor.

Thanks W!zard,
I've been using the cubic UV projection. What is happening is that faces are landing under faces in the UV editor and I had no way to separate them.
I finally figured out that I have to select one face in the 3d window (edit mode) and then I can (usually) move it separately in the UV editor. Sometimes they are still stuck together at one side, though.
It would be nice if the cube was layed out like a map in the UV editor to begin with, instead of like a folded map. |

Unless they improved tS UV Editor, I don't see much use for it myself.
Blender has a powerful UV editor and although the program is different, there are some very nice video tutorials (all free, as in the program.)

If you are so inclined, I would utilize Blender's UV Editor as it costs nothing more than a little viewing time to learn. |

I've been getting lots of practice with the UV editor lately...
About 6 icons down on the left, there is one that looks like a box with a cross on it.
That one welds vertices of the UV together... Click and hold on it, and you can select the one that looks like two edges with dots on them.
THAT one separates the selected UV face from the rest, and you can move it around just fine. |

You can separate a selection from the rest of the UV mapping by selecting the face(s) you want with the PE tools then clicking the slice tool in the UVE.
One that is done you can use the move tool, to drag them to a new location and the selected faces will no longer be attached to the rest of the mapping. |

Well, you guys have done it again. There was a button sitting right there that does the trick. Imagine where I might be today if I would just read the manual a bit more carefully.
Thanks again gentlemen. Jamesmc, thanks for the tip, but the only problem I have with TS is that manual. It turns out I actually have to read it. Bummer.
For your entertainment, here's what I'm working on. |

yay! I love happy endings! The 3d to 2d conversion thing can be a little weird to get your head around at first but once you do the tS UVE is quite useful - even if it's not as functional as some specialised UVE apps.
Good image BTW - shows what can be achieved wit a bit of perseverance. |
