Hi all,
I just upgraded from TS4 (on Windows 2000) to TS7.5 (on Vista) and am having an awful time. Trouble is, I haven't touched TS in several years and don't know if these quirks I'm experiencing are attributable to TS, Vista or my new computer.
For example, the File menu sometimes disappears; Workspace view is empty despite objects visible in Model view; Undo won't undo the most recent edit; etc. And then there's the documentation....
I'm running a brand new IBM ThinkCentre dual-core Intel vPro with nVidia GeForce 7300 LE and 2Gb RAM.
Can anybody please tell me if, generally speaking, TS 7.5 is buggy on Vista? TS doesn't like my video card? Other hardware deficiency? Video driver problem?
Any guidance is GREATLY appreciated.

tS7.5 will run well on Vista. Graphics card drivers (as with all 3D apps) will make a big difference, you can ensure they are up to date by visiting the NVIDIA website.
Objects on Model side and not on workspace suggests the bridge is off - this will let you add something to one side, and it won't show in the other, since there is nothing transferring the content. Bridge settings can be found in the stack on the right, under the Setting tab.
Not sure which File menu you are referring too - the tS6.6 file menu only appears when in Model side, and is not visible in the workspace. Could it be that? You could send along a screen grab, that might help people diagnose what you are seeing.
Undo works differently in the model side and workspace side. Model side, it only runs an undo for the currently selected object. Workspace side, it will undo anything, but you may have camera undo happening, or even undo to settings in the stack (so Undo may be undoing something, just that you didn't notice).
Be sure to download the videos that go along with the manual, they are an extra download not included by default, and can be very helpful.
HTH!

Dave, are you getting a blank blue screen inside workspace and the objects will only show when entering Mesh Edit mode? If so that's a video driver problem. The 163.75 drivers work pretty well if you find the latest drivers are giving problems.
Also don't forget to download the free Workspace Modeling course:

I recorded it all in Vista x64 so things should look and work similar. |

In my bitter experience, Vista is buggy on PC...:D
I have no such problems with Vista but Jack's advice about the driver should help. it should be possible to get a normal driver converted to laptop version-there usined to be a program for doing that with Ati stuff and it worked well for me.
As for the UI...well, I will see if I can dig out a quick reference I did, although I think it was only for tS7.0... |

Thank you for your kind replies.
I'm guessing it's a video driver problem because another quirk is that the editing widgets and object handles are sometimes invisible -- hovering over the right spot will highlight the respective handle, but then disappears when I scroll away. To solve this, I've restarted TS and seen the issue disappear.
Dag nabbit, I waited 6 months for these latest nVidia drivers; they finally fixed the BSOD-on-wake "feature." If downgrading the video drivers helps, I'll have to disable hibernation again.
Again, thank you for the help.
Dave
ps. I downloaded the video tutorials -- they're very helpful -- but it's difficult to determine their chronology. I did find and watch the interface intro but don't know where to go from here without picking through the PDFs for the video links. |

Thank you for the Quick Ref guides! These complement the 7.5 Quick Ref nicely.

I've used nVidia since the 440MX came out. I sure hope nVidia gets their crap sorted soon, because my next upgrade is looking to be an ATI card at this rate. The way I look at it is, what does it matter if nVidia has the fastest hardware if the drivers don't work. |

I had a 7300 LE at one time and it worked pretty good. Do you have Vista Service pack 1 installed?

Yeah, Nvidia driver bugs get old fast. For the past couple of years I've remained rolled back to 78.01. For me it was the best driver build they had. I didn't experience hardly any problems at all with that. I try the latest build every now and again to see if they have something better, but it's always worse.
I just installed 175.19 about a week ago. Now I get occasional flickering widgets and screen, as well as black lines shooting off some models from time to time. I just don't think Nvidia is capable of making good drivers for some reason. I'm with Jack, I think my next card will be an ATI as well. The Nvidia driver issues are just ridicules. |

I'm the same with my NVidia card. I can't change resolution without a reboot as the refresh rates go crazy - loads of people are having that problem too, which basically means no gaming for me on the PC...probably a good thing. I'm looking at getting the new ATI 4850 as it's directX 10.1 and probably double the performance of what I have at a reasonable price....
Thing is, it is only the Vista drivers and probably the way they link to the directx 9 layer. I have always had this problem but XP is just fine. |
