Old habits are hard to kick. The Model Side is OLD technology that will NOT be fixed.
If you really want to start fresh, try to stay on the workSpace side while exploring and learning. Turn the Bridge off for a speed boost. No use sharing resources with the OLD Model side.
All the tools on the workSpace side are NEW. They are the future of trueSpace and should be learned if your in to this Software for the long haul.
Rendering on the workSpace side uses Real Time DX9 and you can save the file (in seconds) by writing to file.
There is an option to purchase VRAy if you want to use a Rendering Engine. (VRay is custom for trueSpace so will not look like 3DMax VRay) however the results are still brilliant.
Most of the problems new users have are using the Bridge and going backwards to the Model side. You can certainly do this but all the new workSpace capabilities aren't recognized by going backwards over the Bridge.
Hence the head scratching.
My recommendations are watch "Organics Modeling 1" by Jack Edwards first to get a feel for all the workSpace tools.
Then you will know what TS7.6 is really about.

I am trying to use this application to generate 3d text for 3d scanning and machining

You can add 3D text using the tool in the workspace side. Most likely you'll want to use an overhead Top view since the plan is for it to be machined. I think you should be able to export from the Model side to STL for getting your models machined direct from tS output.

The store features a link to V-Ray information, you can jump straight to that info below:
