I am trying to do realistic planet rings and the only way I can see how to do this is to flatten a Torus, cut out the centre to size and texture.
The only problem is the textures do not follow the circle, but go accross it.
Anyone know a way of achiving this? PLEASE :) |

Hi OldWrinkly. Welcome to the forums!
I think you may need to change the mapping. For a torus, maybe use cylindrical or spherical mapping? |

For far off shots, I have a ring shader that made planet rings on a flat plane, it's a Shaderlab shader (Shaderlab itself is free now, search for Primitive Itch Shaderlab online and it should uncover the download page).
These shaders are not so good for close up shots though, nor if you want to fly through the rings.

It is possible to animate the rings using the shader though.
HTH!

Here is a planet and it's moon that I made a few years ago. Maybe that will give you what you need.
The planet has a ring around it.

Hi Oldwrinkly!
I used the free darktree Simbiot for trueSpace to make these:
http://www.orbknight.com/gas_giant_background_Medium.jpg
http://www.orbknight.com/ringedplanet.jpg
You can get the Simbiot shader here. (http://www.darksim.com/html/download_simbiont2.html)
Don't forget to grab the darktree repository on the same page, it has (among other things) the ring darktrees I used in the above image. Then you can just map them to a plane, or a flattened cube, and render away. Hope that helps! |

Another carrot in the pot of confusion. :
I just used a home made ring, used it as a normal and transparency map then added a glass shader to it in trueSpace
I used a cylinder with 32 sides, flattened it out and booleaned the center with the same size cylinder. |

The moral of the story here is that there is no wrong way to do it.... whatever gives you the result you like is the right way for you! :)
Render on! |

I could've sworn there was a shader for this, but I made a quick and dirty one in ShaderMagic anyway.

The shader is attached below (just unzip for the ".smb" shader file). Load it with ShaderMagic as reflectance. You can then set the ring color with any color shader (plus an additional ring color). I just painted it on a plane in the example above.
ShaderMagic is available here... (http://home.comcast.net/~ian_kirkley/3d/pages/files.htm) |

Nah! I bet it won't be long before you'll be abler to run 'rings' around us youngsters! Age and cunning beats youth and enthusiasm every time - or so my dear old Mum would have me believe!. |

Thanks Wizard, I did start off in the dark ages using graph paper and loads of code just to do a simple matchstick animation, I thought it was brilliant then.
Waded through Amos, Amal,Dark Basic, Poser and of course Truespace since then.
The only fault now is that my brain seems to have a leak somewhere as I have to write reminders now or I forget.
It's all good fun though so my advice to you all out there is "Keep up the good work" :)...Oldwrinkly |

It's a small world Oldwrinkly (or can I call you Wrinkle for short?;):D). I'm surprised your son returned to the UK though - most Brits who come here tend to stay, myself included (I was born in Kent). |

Check out the link to the old Caligari forums. I posted a quick and dirty tutorial using Nurbs to create easy planet rings. Cheers!

this is only my second post so I hope I'm not breaking any rules.
I download you're home made ring picture and used it as a color map.
i hope it's ok.
i did the same thing with a cylinder as you did.
and here's what i came up with: if I posted it right.:D
i'm still learning... i'll explain, follow link:
