One of my all time favorite games is Jet Set Radio Future for the Xbox. It is a game I still love to play. The game has great music, art, and game play. I started on a new project based on this game. I plan to do a scene but I thought I would share what I have done so far.
This is Beat one of the main guys from the game.
C&C welcome. |

Never played the one on the XBox, though I did play the one on the PS2. This does an excellent job of capturing the style and look of the Jet Set Radio games, so well done there! Look forward to seeing the scene you had in mind too :)
Thanks!

Thanks for the comments.
Here is an image of the mesh Kena. I tried to keep it low poly. I knew for the shader I was going to use and the style I wanted I did not need a lot of geometry. I ended up making a few different meshes(head, shirt, skates, etc.) and then skinning them together with Motion Studio. |

Rockin'!
Can't wait to see it move about, around and over buildings, through the streets, kung foo-ing giant monsters, conquering the universe...
well, a simple walk cycle would do. :) |

Here is a little update. I rigged his fingers, so now I can animate those too. I also started work on the scene. Lot's still to do there. I'm going to try and capture what they had in the game. It takes place in Tokyo so there are signs everywhere and lots of tall buildings. I plan on making an animation later but first I want to finish this image. Besides I need to find out how to do a skate cycle. I have done walk cycles before but never a skate cycle.
[Runs to play the game to see how they skate.] |

Looking really good! Brought back memories of playing the earlier game, racing around in a square near a bus station as police arrived and poured out the back of trucks, etc etc.
Don't get too caught up in playing the game now, we want to see more work on the image ;)
Thanks!

I'm like 3dfrog in that I'm not familiar with the game but I love the styling - very cool work. I suspect this will become a popular thread. |

Thanks. Glad to see that the style is coming through. The one thing I want to capture from the game is that awesome style. Your right on track Tom with the bus station. That is the area I'm recreating for the image.:) |

I have worked on the city a little more. Added clouds, and signs. I think I still need to add some more signs to the scene. I also started on one of the bosses from the game. I'm thinking of having him in the background taged by Beat. |

looking good. Not familiar with the game, but it looks like that leggy thing would hop around quite energetically! |

Holy crap, how did I miss this?!
Shibuya Terminal is looking good there, as is Beat. Obviously, you can see I know the game - it's probably my second favorite game of all time, behind Rez. A couple of years ago I custom-made a Beat t-shirt for my son for Christmas (I decided on the orange one from the first game though), and I kept the "trial run" for myself. And I'm one of the few people who prefers JSRF over the original JS(G)R on the Dreamcast (sorry Tom, your memory is bad, you didn't play on no PS2 :P)
Have you watched the anime (or read the manga) Air Gear? It's basically a sexier Jet Set Radio, and while it's not exactly high art, I loved it.
What I wouldn't give for a new JSR game (though it won't happen, considering Smilebit disbanded) |

Thanks for the reply guys, your giving me a lot of confidence in my vision.
Simon good to see there's even more fans of this game in the community. Yes I have seen Air Gear. Man that show is a total ripoff of Jet Set Radio. Even the gangs in the show are a lot like the ones in JSRF. But it's still a good anime.
Sorry Simon I'm not using dribble. :o I'm using U|V toon shader for the render. I found when trying to do my old Liger ZERO image(http://forums.caligari.com/discus/messages/1583/18144.html?) it seemed to give me the results I wanted.
I started playing around on how I want the image to look. I think Beats pose needs more work. Any suggestions on what looks good and what doesn't? |

Oh, I didn't think you were using dribble, there's no toon stuff there yet. It can happen though.
I think you're right, the pose does need some work. I'm not an artist so I don't have great words of wisdom, but I know there's at least one "how to draw comic book characters" that talks about creating a more dynamic pose. Do you have the Beat action figure? You could try copying that - though I don't remember the exact pose and can't find a pic of it online right now. |

Interestin as I never owned a Dreamcast, I must have played this when I borrowed one for a bit though I guess :) Image is coming along well, looking forward to seeing more - you are right about the pose of course, he looks a bit still or rigid but I'm sure you'll find a solution for that!
Thanks for sharing!

Thanks for the input guys. Thanks kena for the links.
I think I'll try the pose on the front cover of the game to see how that looks in the scene. Let see if I can get him in to a dynamic action pose.:) |

I updated his pose. I think this is a lot better then the last one. I used the pose from the cover and tweaked it a little to fit what I wanted. Also what do you guys think about the motion blur? I like it but is it too much? In the game there is a lot of motion blur that's why I put it in there. Still lots left to do.:) |

Much improved, a world of difference to me! The motion blur isnt too much, but it does look kind of drop-shadow like to my eye (making Beat look like he is above the background, which may not be an entirely bad thing, though he is a bit "out of the scene" as a result).
It might be because the motion blur is only from his edges, and not showing on the parts "inside" him. If left as is, I'd say its very good, though I'd be interested in trying different motion blur looks in this particular case just to see what came out looking best :)

I see what your saying Tom, about it being drop shadow like. I think it looks like that too. Like you said it appears like its only coming off the edges. I think also because of the color of the blur is mostly black.
I updated a few thing mainly Beats shadow. It was on the wrong side compared to the rest of the image. I chanced his hair a little to make it more like his hair from the game. Then I updated the blur to be more on top of him. I also made the blur stronger for areas of color.(skates, shirt, spray can) I had to remove some of the blur that was in front of his face and the spray can. I think it will help draw your eyes to those areas. I added a cloud to the left to balance the sky a little more. I think I might be done with this image. What do you guys think is there anything that needs to be added or fixed? |
