I'm trying to render an animation to file, but only get an avi of the 1st frame. I've chosen all fames and a range. The render dialog once told me the frames spanned from -50 to -300 for an animation created in the Workspace. I made another animation on the model side and was told the frames went from 0-0. However, I can view the animation on both sides.

Does anyone else find TS just a little unintuitive?

Model side is legacy and only provided for backward compatibility as TrueSpace transitions to the new core (Workspace). I recommend that new users use Workspace only, except for importing models in older formats. Once Workspace side plugins for loading those formats become available, I recommend not using model side at all. Model side will be removed (hopefully in the next version) and then those interface problems will resolved simply because Model side will no longer be there.

Yes, I Know there is a camp here that doesn't like the TS6/model side. Not only do I prefer the TS6 side, it has a renderer. The free TS7 doesn't have a renderer on the TS7 side.

Anyway, are you saying animation won't function properly because of the versions being mixed? If it's all free now, can I get a TS6?

It's not a matter of not liking on side or the other. The Animation tools between the two sides are not compatible. :(

You can do animation in Model side the same as in 6.6 using the Model side tools if you like.

I tried animation exclusively in both sides. I just thought there might be a common mistake that only renders the 1st frame over and over.

Could be a bug and I'm not understanding the problem correctly, if you can post a video that would definitely help. :)

In trueSpace, you have to hit the record button each time you do an action.

Not doing so will only record the first frame. After you record the action, advance the translucent box (workspace side) to the frame you next want to record, then perform another action, press record button.

or

It could be that you didn't designate the frames in the render file box.

The render dialog box shows a start at and a range of files to save.

You might find it useful to read the Manual. :)
In Model you have the Scene Editor.

In the Model's "Render to File" dialog look in the Animation Combo Control and choose Modeler to render a Model animation.

Yea, I did all that. I had animation when I hit play. I defined my range. I even elected to render all frames. Did you see where I talked about the odd ranges being reported by the render dialog?

I understand keyframing. From all the work I 've done in other programs. It seemed like I was doing everything correctly.

No, I didn't look it up in the manual. Not only is it a common procedure for other programs that render an animation, the manual that came with the TS7 I got is very hard to use. It's an html file linked to pdf's. Clicking on a pdf from a web page brings up a dialog asking me if i'd like to open it, put it in a download manager, or save it. The biggest problem is, it's a bunch of pamphlets. I'm on a computer, I expect a searchable cross-referenced help file. My intent is not to lean back with a picture book, but to get precise directions for completing tasks.

The manual is searchable from within Adobe reader, simply search the folder rather than the current file to see all references to your search phrase in all chapters. I never open it from the HTML, I just open one PDF chapter directly then start searching from there.

For the animation, to diagnose, we can return to basics and build up toward your scene. Take a cube and record a start and end position only, then try rendering, see if you get the expected ranges. If you build the animation in Model side, ensure to render from there in the dialog; same if you build the animation workspace side, ensure you choose the workspace side in the render dialog. Don't build an animation in both sides in the same scene though.

If that works, try adding more to the animation and try again. If that works, try clearing the animation in your problem scene and rebuilding it.

If at any point something doesn't work, post the scene here for us to take a look at (in fact if you can do that with the problem scene giving odd ranges, that would be great!).

Note that you can set frames in negative time in the workspace if you choose. I think you can only render from 0 upward though. So that strange range may be correct (seeing the scene would help, or a screengrab from the Animation Editor workspace side).

HTH!

It's because I was rewinding the animation before I rendered it. I put the cue at the end of the timeline, and was able to render the animation.

Strangely, when I put the cue in the middle of the timeline and selected the full range of frames, the animation rendered normally until the middle, at which point the frames rendered in reverse order. (Yes, that is one sentence)
