i'm trying to figure out how the selection scope/grouping works in truespace. it seems like every time i import an object (obj file) or drag a new primitive on the workspace, then unselect after initial selection and try to reselect individual objects, to for instance delete one, it selects everything and wont let me delete just the one object, it makes me delete them all :(

is there some way to group/ungroup?

thx

If you add a primitive while in Mesh Edit mode it is added directly to the mesh of the object you are editing. So in that case it isn't a group but a single object.

Grouping is done with the Encapsulated in 3D icon. Ungrouping hasn't been implemented yet. Stan has a script for doing that though.

You can select an object with in a group by using the down arrow key to select the sub objects, then the left and right arrow keys to cycle the sub objects. Once the sub object you want to remove from the group is selected, you can save it to library, press the delete key to delete it from the group then load it back from the library.

You can also use the Scene view and Link Editor windows to manage groups. Objects can be dragged from one Link Editor window to another, which allows you to move an object to be within a different group or to the base scene level.

An imported OBJ does come in as one object. Mostly it's in a hierarchy, which you can navigate in the LE, or use the arrow keys on the keyboard (down takes you down into the currently selected group if there is another level, and left and right moves from object to object in the current group - so pressing down, then left and right will take you into the imported object, and then down again will take you into the next layer if the selected object is a group inside the main group).

To instantly separate such a group into separate objects, you can use "Split Hierarchy into..." tool on the Model side.

Sometimes objects come in "stuck together" and the arrow keys won't let you navigate the hierarchy, and in that instance on the Model side the "Decompose Into Objects" will split them apart again.

HTH!
