Thanks James. lol. Yeah froggy warfare would be funny.

Here's how it looks in the other engine. They look pretty different. I'm not sure which I like better. There are elements in this one I like better but I can match them in ts with a little tweaking.

TS and dribble look about the same. the one in the first pic has more defined shadows. Otherwise, is the same as the other two. The first one has less reflextion, so that is probably why it gets more shadow.

Thought I'd show you guys the final animation. The models were done in ts, but this final animation and rendering was done in another app. And believe me I had a hard time with character animation in the other app, I have since rigged him in ts and he is much happier there :)

Well, here it is:

Good to see the animation finished, though poor froggy must have a headache after his latest starring role!

Hopefully we will continue to see more animation from you, and more of frog too :)

Thanks for sharing!

Thanks folks. It was mostly fun making this animation. If you think spending a lot of money on one of the "big boys" out there will spare you bugs you are sorely mistaken. I use max for jobs for someone and wouldn't even have it if the company I do freelance for didnt give me a license, and I never had problems with those tasks, but they were simple stuff. Getting into character animation, well thats another story. The constraints dont work as expected or described in giving control from one object to another, and although I had it working at one point there were unexpected flips in rotation that I could not resolve even after desperately searching for help. And you don't get help from autodesk unless you pay an additional 500 dollar maintenance fee. It may have been easier to do this in ts with faking it by making two objects, one with the word attached and one without and doing some video editing. Also, I was not able to use the biped feature built into max because it is horrible and buggy, but found a good free rig that was a pleasure to use actually. I always thought max was a rock solid app but this experience has changed my mind some.

I will be doing more with the frog in ts, but he is tied up in beta right now so only beta team will see it until release, sorry folks.

Great work Frog! :D  I thought you did a great job of giving the impression of weight when he's carrying the sign. I only have two small critiques. When he starts to set it down, I would expect the end of the sign away from him to slam on the ground first as he starts to drop it (because it's so heavy). Instead it seems to stop in mid air and then drops flat. It doesn't quite look right to me. Also I think it would look nicer if you had a wall or something behind him. It looks odd to have a wooden floor but a blank blue background to me.

As I said though, I think you got the weight carry walk down very well. When I watch that it looks like the sign is heavy. Nicely done! :)

...poor frog.

Thanks Dele

I am redoing it in ts now because max constraints were too restricting to do it properly. Unfortunately again, I am doing it in beta so it wont be shown to public for a while. Funny you say that about the wall, I added a wall last night :). And the word does drop better now.

Bad thing about you being on the beta team, you create these cool characters but end up not being able to share them under cover of NDA. Good bye Froggy. Good bye Jane, Good bye Plumber Guy with exposed crack thats a pain. (Starting to sound like a "Breakfast in America" song...

lol Steinie,
I think you are on to something there. Let's see...

Good bye Froggy, Good bye Jane
Good bye Plumber Guy with a crack that's a pain.
We will all miss you and that is plain.
We will wait and we will hope for all new gain.

We will hope and we will pray
to see you again when you are able to stay.
Come what will, Come what may.
In the next version of Truespace where we can all play.

Back to the drawing board on this one. I made some changes here. I fixed the feet on the frog drop. 3d drops faster, and the camera shakes on the drop. I had an animation lesson today and learned some things i will apply to the frog now. If anyone sees anything to improve this please let me know. I need this to be really good. I guess i posted on image gallery prematurely. I just had a lot of great input since i put it up.

Hmm... I wonder if the classic curved white (gray) product display plane wouldn't be a better background for this animation than the wooden floor which seems a bit dated...?

Also the frog looking around animation seems a bit stiff. Instead of him stopping then starting the next movement abruptly, I think the movements need to be blended together more naturally.

It definitely needs some sound effects too.

Wood, if it is kept shiny and reflective because when froggy is animated, it will be cool seeing little green slivers dancing in the floor. ;)

That works! Some spots for the old dance routine as well, maybe some curtains in the background and a cane and a hat! :D

I like the last floor wood best but needs more sheen. I agree that a reflection would enhance.

It's the black background that doesn't work for me.

To get an idea of what I meant by a white background, compare with the robot getting crushed animation that Gas Powered Games did for the Dungeon Siege.

I just don't think a wooden floor (or any kind of textured floor for that matter) looks "professional". Unless maybe it's self contained in a spotlight and the rest of the screen is also black. The focus should be on your character and the logo, not his background setting.

Call me crazy, but I'm thinking his 'stage' should naturally be a lily pad.
As a bonus you'll get to animate it moving and bouncing.
Just think how much fun that will be!
If it sounds like I'm mumbling it's because my tongue is in my cheek.

I've mentioned this in IRC but I still think the 'frog' word should bounce a little when the '3D' lands next to it and also when the frog bounds back out from beneath the '3D'... like he kicked it just a little on his way up.

I did add a bounce to the text, I guess its too fast to read, I'll extend it out a few frames. I'm working out some new ideas for color. I almost got it. I want to blur the line where the ground meets the wall but cant figure out how. I'm downloading vray tutorial now to see if there's any ideas in it. Kicking the word frog would be cool but then it would not be aligned to 3d for the final look. There is a lot happening at the end, it may get too busy.

What do you guys think of this look? It's very different than the wood and black. It does show off the character better.

I personally like this one better frog.

it has a 'clean slate' kind of look; like an empty stage ready to be dressed for the show.

I justed went to pixars page and watched the sneak peak of luxo junior. I hadn't seen it in a long time. The setting is wood floor and black background very similar to what I had. Doh. Guess it was sitting in the back of my mind. Best not use that. I think this greyish white scene looks nicer for the 21st century :)
