The bitesize videos are informal videos put together that cover just one very small topic, primarily from the point of view of someone new to tS who just wants an answer to one question in isolation.

I'll be putting these together as and when I can - they are rough and ready, not pre-scripted, but they should provide some quick information!

First four - The 2nd video has the noise of a lawn mower outside, hazard of summer time! As noted these are in the vein of fast food, some quick and easily digested speedy looks at specific areas of tS. I'll keep adding these as I think of them and as time permits.

These first take a look at rendering from tS, since some folks wonder where the render engines are (or even if there are any). Remember, I'm not exploring the options and details, just a quick glance, so you can see where things are. You can then follow up with exploration and experimentation, with the video courses, or keep an eye out for more Bitesize videos as they are created.

The thread is closed, comments are welcome, but please post them in a separate thread. I want to keep this thread solely to build up a collection of these videos in one easy to find location on the boards :) Note that I have edited some posts where I updated the videos - this one post now lists all updated videos for clarity.

Thanks!

First in a series looking into exporting to Virtual Earth. This one deals with the process of exporting itself.

Second in the series looking at VE, this looks at sharing links to your VE creations!

This one looks at what to do with objects with holes. You'll run into these, eg buildings with doors and windows, expecially if you build them using Boolean Subtraction.

These are usually fine in tS, but can be a problem when exported to other packages - the holes may end up filled in either fully or partially, or the faces may render badly. This applies to Virtual Earth for example and is presented here as part of that series, but does apply to more apps and render engines and export formats so is of general use.

Here is the video:

This one looks at using the VE Lights set up from the Lights library, then rotating your object in tS to get the desired lighting, then exporting. Once in VE you can rotate your object freely (and the lighting effect rotates with it, preserving which faces are light and which dark - this means you only need to think about rotation in tS in terms of the lighting, and re-orient the rotation once in VE to line it up as desired).

A switch from the VE series back to rendering, since the question of rendering animations has come up on the forums a couple of times, today's Bitesize video takes a look at that.

First I make a short and simple animation workspace side, then I show the settings to render using the real-time engine, then using the Lightworks offline engine. Hope it proves useful!

Hi all,

I've often thought that tS, with all its features, may be overwhelming on opening for those new to 3D software. In your first few hours (or days, or weeks) with the program, you may not want skeletons and animation and physics and V-Ray rendering icons etc.

So I have created a layout designed to have the modeling, texturing and lighting tools, and to hide away some of the other tools you may not need to worry about. You can download it here:

http://cdn.caligari.com/Bitesize/BitesizeSimple_Layout.zip

Just download and unzip, then use the File menu in the workspace to load it.

To give you an intro to the layout (and you can see how to load it if you are unsure), here is a video - wouldn't be a bitesize entry without a video!

http://cdn.caligari.com/Bitesize/SimpleLayout.wmv

(4Mb)

Some extra notes - you can open the main, default toolbars at any time (they are the small squares, as pointed out in the video). You can also just click on "Default" in the tabs in the top left to restore the default layout at any time - you may want to do that when following courses and videos which use the default layout, since I've moved them around a bit in this Simple Layout.

These are pretty long for bitesize videos, but they are still intended as intro videos so I will post them here.

These cover how to make a fly through using the real-time renderer in trueSpace. In this case as our scene we use the Microsoft Retail Experience Center, made by Augusto Michelis.

First how to animate the camera:

http://cdn.caligari.com/Bitesize/FlythroughAnimating01.wmv

(33Mb)

Next, how to render from that camera's point of view:

http://cdn.caligari.com/Bitesize/FlythroughRendering.wmv

(26Mb)

After following those steps you'll need to take your still images into a video application to assemble them into a video, eg Virtualdub.

Here is the sort of thing you can end up with (music added later outside of tS, as you can't add audio directly to a real-time render):
