I am trying to follow through Chapter 5 in the manual. I load the Bentley object and select some surfaces on the door, like in the manual. When I open the UV editor, it says 'No valid selection'. I have tried on a couple of other objects, but the only one that would work is the rhino object. What am I missing here?

you are selecting a complex object. You need to drill down more.

Here is a video to help you out.

Objects can be "glued together" using the Encapsulate in 3D tool, making them into a group of objects that can be manipulated as one.

For the UV Editor to work, you have to select just one object out of the group - it won't UV the group as a whole, and will say no valid selection if you try.

Navigate down into the hierarchy of the object (using the arrow keys on the keyboard or the LE, see the manual for more detail on hierarchies) and then you will be able to apply UV editing.

HTH!
