Hi there, it's been a while since I've been on the forums and first off I think it's great news that trueSpace is now free! I'm deployed to Afghanistan right now and I am enjoying the time I have with tS and everything that goes along with it. It's good to see a lot of familiar faces on the boards too.

Anyway, I do have a question. I'm doing the course for Product Illustration and I'm trying to work on the threads of the bulb. Is the model side (or is it workspace side, I always confuse them and I don't have my computer at the moment) the only place that I can create the threads? Or can I do it a different way. I've tried a couple of approaches but haven't had any success. So, has anyone modeled anything like this using the new tools?

Thanks!

Tyler

I never watched the illustration course but I'm doing illustration work every day and I still belive that Modeler side is the best place for this sort of work (to me, Workspace is designed for real-time projects)

For example, you will probably want to use the PSD render/export format, which is available via Lightworks renderer, on Modeler side only.

Emanuel is right that the modeler side was used for the threads in that video. The author makes use of layers and those are only available on the modeler side. What's odd is that he created a boolean tool to subtract the grooves. I didn't remember him doing that. You can also use the method illustrated in the manual tutorial for creating a screw. It's in chapter 4 and starts on page 67.

OR... you can do it in the workspace...

1. Create your 16 sided cylindar and use the polygon draw tool in workspace to draw your threading on the cylindar.

2. Use the bevel tool (quads unchecked and offset 45) to bevel the thread you just created.

3. Select the loop created from your new bevel and add a final bevel to that edge (offset zero -- I almost forgot to zero in the video)

4. Finish off the caps of your cylinder and subdivide once. :)

I'd already drawn my screw thread so I just showed where that tool is.

Note: leave enough room between the ends of your thread and the cylinder caps for you bevel. You can always move the caps closer after you've created the threading.

Wow! Thank you for the video, that was very kind of you. I didn't realize there was something in the manual either. I really appreciate you taking the time to do that. It helped a lot.

Thanks for that video. I can't say enough how useful these little tips by experienced users are.

You're both very welcome... I'm glad I could help. :)

Your questions help us learn too. I hadn't thought about creating a screw thread in the workplace side until you asked.

That Intro to Product Illus course is one of my favorites. I never did build the entire thing, but that course is what helped me understand how works the UVE in TrueSpace. I still reference parts of the tutorials when I get stuck on something. They give me ideas of different approaches for doing things and of what the different tools can do. I think it was just awesome for them to make all the tutorials free. :)
