I finished W!ZARD's latest Tutorial and rebuild his truck from scratch, then imported it into Vue.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v623/greypiffle/Greys_world/truck04.jpg
Now, It's time for me to work on something on my own. Thinking about it, one of the hardest things for me to work out was how to make the wheels with the tread that he created...
So for my next trick, I decided to see if I could make a medium-poly wheel.
Here is my start.

looks nifty man..did you use vc rad for the tread? Also did you check if cars of that age had tire tread patterns like that? Seems more modern. I could be wrong. |

Nice work Kena. Though I've got to ask - how did you get the truck parked there? :p;):D |

The tread looks good, now fashion the inner lip where it mates with the rim. |

OH, I'm not making tires for that model T... I'm just making more modern tires, and I will use them in some sort of scene.
This is what I used as a model to make the treads.... I modified it only slightly.

That was the easy part! Just follow the grass Verge there. there is a little bump as you back into the spot, and you have to be carefull not to go over the edge.

yeah... I have to look a bit closer at my Tires when I get a chance to make it look right. |

You still did not address how you wrapped the tread around the tire...vc rad or by other means..the only reason I ask..is that is one of the jobs ahead of me..I am considering using a dis map and rendering in dribble. |

Ah.. Displacement maps may be what you want. Here is what I did.
I started my tread pattern.
11438
Made it long enough to make into a band. While doing this, I unioned the objects together. I used a spacer to get that right.
11439
Then I used "Bend current Object" to put it into a circle
11440
Using my spacer, I plugged in a final set and unioned it.
11441
Then a few toruses later, I had my full Tire.
I live in an apartment and I do my laundry at the clubhouse about this time of night, because I can always get a machine.
Bringing my laundry there tonight I paid attention to how the wheels of the various cars were attached to the rims, and I actually found several that looked like my previous picture! I think I saw one that I would like to emulate though, so I'm going to try for it. |

And before I start on the rim, here is a quick view of the tire side-on.
I used the point-edit mode to tilt the edges in and give it that slightly-rounded look.

I cant remember off hand how I made the tread on my tyres. Your technique is a beauty Kena - simple and elegant - I like it! |

Kena, clever how you did the tread! I'm storing this tutorial in the back of my mind for future retrieval.
Can you remind me monthly that I did that...:o |

If you like, I can put up a thread in the Tutorium for it.. It's an easy technique that I use for a lot of things. I like bend and I like sweep and lathe. |

OK - until I can think of something to do with these, this is it.
Any suggestions?

yep - dirty those walls up, add some advertising poster and a girly calendar, tool boxes on the floor, maybe a floor jack and a wheel brace....
You're tyres look great - just needs some more props to sell the picture. |

@Kena
In addition to what Wizard recommended, cut back the ambient to give your shadows more depth. |

@ W!ZARD - the wals and "floor" were just put in there for a background. I definitely do not intend for them to be more than placeholders. I'm considering various things for props. the Tool box idea is pretty good. I may do one of those tool cabinets. I'll have to look for a good girly calendar pic... I was thinking just a normal one-sheet calendar, but I like your idea.
@ rjeff - Glad I could help! Nice tire too. You need a bit more variation on the coloring though. I used a black and white cloud texture I got from W!ZARDs tutorial for mine.
@ Jack - good Idea.. I'm still not very good with lighting, but I will definitely give it more of a try.
I got involved in the speed model challenge, but I really need to get back to this one. ;) |

OK started working on this one again. Here, I have blocked out a wheel for the roll-away tool chest.

Nice job Kena - although the tool box does dominate the scene now. Again it needs to be dirty and scratched up and have a few STP stickers on it. |

Thank you... I'm still tweeking the tool chest here and there as you can see. I still need to add a handle to open the top with and then maybe ding it up some and add scratches in the right places. I also need something to hold the lid open. :D
and I added a small tire iron.

I'll be honest with you the textures on the walls and floor are giving me the creeps. The floor looks like chunky mud, can you make it repeat two or three more times to get the scale to match the rest of the objects. I like your tires, toolbox and lug wrench.
I've noticed this in a lot of your work before that if you would use the same textures but scale them down they would look much more realistic. I hope this helps.
Picture yourself at the same scale as your renderings and picture in your head what the texture would look like at that size. I do this all the time. |

floor and walls are just place holders. They are just thrown up to give something for the objects to "interact" with. I will put up "real" walls and floor once I have my other objects arranged and textured right. You will see them change from time to time as I work out how various reflections and color bleeds work. |

You can use a piano type hinge on your tool chest that is tensioned with an internal wire (don't have to model the wire) and it will be sufficient to hold the lid up. :) |

That's an Idea Jamesmc.. I will look into it.
I got a bit sidetracked though...
I tried to dent my chest, but it just doesn't want to render well.
Here is a shot of the wire of the dent... It actually goes half the thickness of the side.
11535
Yet on the render, you can barely see a scratch.
11536
Does this one look better?

I think this is at least in part due to your lighting setup. The light appears to shine directly on the dented surface which means your 'dent geometry' is evenly lit and doesn't throw any shadows.
The tool box itself does not throw shadows - look at the front left caster.
If your lighting of the dented side was more oblique the dent mesh would cast shadow and be more noticeable.
Additionally, I would recommend getting some photo textures of scratched metal to use in your bump channel. You have the tS to Vue course - check out the textures on the bus, there should be a good scratched metal texture there.
