And for Jack's OTHER suggestion... I set the Luminance to zero for the walls... I don't know though... seems too dark for me.... what do you all think?

And for Jack's OTHER suggestion... I set the Luminance to zero for the walls... I don't know though... seems too dark for me.... what do you all think?

That wall works for me - looks more real. In reality concrete blocks don't have a luminance value and I tend to almost never use the luminance setting at anything other than zero - unless it's a light source.

Many of my earliest textures had varying levels of luminance but it quickly became a hassle to keep them all all balanced. One of the checks I do before final renders is to place all lights on a separate layer and turn it off. Rendering the picture should then give a black image as there is no light in the scene (apart from deliberately luminescent objects like light bulbs or computer screens).

Like all rules it has the odd exception but I always find it easier to get consistent lighting and shadow effects (including better results from my bump maps) by having zero luminance in my materials.

If you want your wall to look brighter - make it a lighter colour, increase is shine and or reflectance (for a hi-gloss paint look) or simply make your lights brighter!

Hope this helps.

PS - I rated this thread because I think it is an excellent example of what a WIP thread should look like. Starting with an OK image and discussing each aspect until you end up with what you have here - an increasingly brilliant finished art work. Kena you are an inspiration to all those folk who give up too soon and end up with a hard drive full of unfinished projects. At the end of this you'll have a picture you can rightfully be very proud of as you have put in the work, the practice the research and the time to produce something really worthwhile.

Thank you WIZARD! Those are very kind and considered words. I'm always trying to improve my work, and really depend on the feedback I get in my WIP threads. I keep working to improve, and I hope that my various WIPs can be used by other people to improve their images as well.

This is HUGELY improved Kena!

Only thing I can recommend is that if you want to make the walls brighter, lighten or up the gamma on your wall texture bitmap in your paint program. Or like Wizard said, make the lights brighter. ;)

OK... decided to try brightening the lights here... the area lights were already almost at the top... I increased them a small amount, and upped the infinite lite by a degree.

I think I'm happier with this one.

Cool! Try a render with all the lights off - you should see everything black. I could be wrong but it looks like the luminance levels are too high on the air hose reel and the calendar which will throw out any shadows or lights falling on them.

Also you're not limited to the slider values for brightness on the lights. If you right click on the intensity slider, it pops up a dialog box that lets you type in a numeric value. The secret to using Dribble is being able to type in very high numeric values for area lights. ;)

Also as I'm sure Wizard can now attest to, it really helps to have your monitor calibrated.

Try some of these sites and make sure you've got your monitor calibrated correctly:
http://www.photofriday.com/calibrate.php
http://www.simpelfilter.de/en/farbmanagement/monitorcalibration.html
http://epaperpress.com/monitorcal/
http://home.comcast.net/~morrised2006/tips/monitor.htm

Also very useful is this app here:
http://www.ykwong.com/checkemon.html
The color gradient option is particularly useful for adjusting the output for each individual color channel.

I do have some objects with a slight Luminosity. But not the air hose ;)

None of the ones that have luminosity have more than .7

11826

looking at the calendar, it has .01 or so for the picture.

This was something Jack picked up recently in one of my images - I wasn't even aware of the issue, having used the default luminosity value. It can make a surprising difference as you've shown - I really like the version at the top of th epage with the walls turned down...

Just wanted to add to the 'well dones' too Kena - having been away from the forums for a few day, I left the thread at about page 10 - and it's come on a tremendous amount (not to mention a significant number of posts!) since then - and the improvement is very evident. I think it's great that you're prepared to spend so long taking on board people's comments, even recognising that it's constructive - some people would find it tiresome (pardon the pun!) and might have given up by now. I'm in a similar boat to you I believe in terms of trying to find ways of lifting my images to a higher standard and like you I appreciate all the constructive help that people here offer. Keep it up! :D

LOL! Clearly I have no idea what I'm talking about! I'd be embarrassed if I hadn't already spent half my life 'getting things wrong'!:D

Good on you for giving it a go though.

I guess the hose reel and calendar just aren't as distressed as the other surfaces.

Hi Kena

The dark wall is the most realistic one and as W!zard points out coloring on some objects starts to look unrealisticm they're not candles ;)

you could probably sit all day long and might have anyway but lets try another old trick, what you had to do before these "render" buttons...

Go back to the old dark wall settings and now cheat :) with a light a bit above and to the right corner, set it to no shadows, and here comes the good part, use it to set the mood you're after, that is probably some grey would to just to lighten things up the bit you're after.

Or just a hind blue for scary cold look or even a bit yellow orange for a nicer feel for the render.

Sometimes you need to set alot of small lights to get what you want, this is very old shool but learns you the principles and how to handle lights.

Like this image, think I had 7-8 bluish lights, just to get the metal look:

Keep up the good work, looking good!

Now hockey...

I used bright white for the calendar.. that may have done it for you on that.

For the hose reel... I spent an hour and a half getting just the right shade of orange. Nice and bright to catch the attention and prevent you from tripping over it. I don't know how much time I will have to work on this tonight because this morning, my PC was going REALLY slow... I need to defrag and check disk. It's been a month since I've done those.

Bummer Kena. Now is a good time to upgrade though, the performance of these new machines is incredible and the prices are pretty good too.

Sorry to hear Kena

Run these in "safe mode"

Spybot Search & Destroy (http://fileforum.betanews.com/sendfile/1043809773/1/spybotsd152.exe)

When installing let it set Tea timer, also run update and Immunise the system, needed everytime you update.

Adaware (http://www.lavasoftusa.com/products/ad_aware_free.php)

Can't find were the file ends up so follow the download, update and run.

Microsoft Defender, never seen it caught anything though!?

Run your Antivirus software.

Run all this and an extra time when you should not find anything.

If you still have problem, last resort run SPfix:

ahh, posting this later...

You've everyting needed here, online scanners, host files etc. and help:

http://forums.techguy.org/general-security/603629-security-help-tools.html

Settings configurations:

http://forums.techguy.org/general-security/603635-general-security-information-how-tighten.html

Good luck and I must rush, kids to school etc.

I'll take a look at this thread later...

It took 2 days to scan for virus... Then my Zone alarm would not update the spyware... server busy messages... So I downloaded Ad-aware 2007 and ran that to find all 307 infections... Running a bit smoother now, but still getting some hesitations, so will reboot and re-scan.

OK - ran spybot, and it found 135 more things... Now my PC runs correctly again

I went in and took out the Luminosity for all the objects except for the picture in the calendar, and overall, I think I like it with (pic 1) than without (pic2)

with

11869

and without

11870

The one without is just too reflective. Maybe that would be a good tip... dim reflections by upping the Luminosity just a small amount.

What do you think?

Raising luminosity is a cheese that doesn't properly address the issue of poor lighting. Adding luminosity makes the object a light source. Does a toolchest really glow and give off light?

If the scene is too dark, make the lights brighter or add more lights to simulate light bounced off a surface.

If the reflections are too high, then why not turn down the reflection?

It looks like the area light is set too dark in the bottom one. Likely because you set it using the scene with the luminosity set on the materials. I think this scene would be right on target if you just increased the brightness of the area light and lowered the reflection on the toolchest some.

Don't give up now Kena, you're really close to nailing this one! :D

It looks good Kena. The shadows are nice and rich. I'd still go brighter on the area light. If the slider is maxed than right click and enter in a numeric value. ;)

Very good Kena

I should say this is done unless you want to:

# change the floor

# a bit of chaos

As it's now it's very tidy, how it should look yes but never looks ;)

I'm just talking about small angles here and there, eveything is now streight.

Small and not big so one spots it's been done on purpose...

Forexample change one calendar hanging a bit out of angle, maybe move the toolbox from the wall only on one side.

and that's it.

anyway it looks good as is and you've done a great job with it, that's for sure, so if you feel it's done it is and you should be proud!

Keep up the good work.

OK - only 18 pages to this WIP, but I'm gonna call this image done. Lots of things I could do/add to it, and I could probably find myself working on this image for a year, but you just gotta know when to stop.

look in my Submitted pictures (http://forums1.caligari.com/truespace/showthread.php?p=64380#post64380) for the final render and see if you can find the special surprise that makes this picture look like it's more of an active place.

And special thanks (in order of suggestions) to W!ZARD, rjeff, Jack Edwards, Steinie, jamesmc, 3dfrog, TheWickedWitchOfTheWeb, hultek43, v3rd3, spacekdet. Changa, Ambrose and Nez.
Without your suggestions, critiques and general opinions and help this picture would be about 10% of how the final turned out.
