Well, after much procrastinating, ruminating, and general faffing around, I'm finally back behind my P.C. pushing polygons, tweaking textures and buggering about with bump maps.

Its been far too long and its good to see so many new names at the best forum on the web.:)

Well heres what I have so far: I'm going for a much simpler design than my usual work (after the work that I put into my troll I figure I deserve it;))

This little fellow is meant to be a non-specific creature. Part imp, part pixie, a bit of fairy and maybe a smattering of elf. Basically a beasty that cant be pigeonholed as any particular type. If you like........ a thing.

I'm planning to use him and his friends in a series of design that I plan to sell on Cafepress (along with some of my existing designs)

I'm going for an anime look which is why he has such large eyes. His/her eyes are going to be added in the texture stage along with his mouth which will hopefully add to the anime look.

As always, I'm open to any comments and suggestions (good or bad)

(deep breath)...............Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhh! its good to be back:jumpy:

More importantly Madmouse; is that tS?

Looking good as normal but if it is for sale, maybe consider leaving the eye sockets hollow and add separate eyes? That way they could be animated separately...just a thought.

Damn good to see you back old friend...:D

Madmouse, hmmmm Madmouse, let me think back, I vaguely remember that name. Let me pull out my Greek God book,.....flip, flip, flip.....yes that's him, the Greek God of Modeling and Texturing.

Wait! A hand written note next to his Rodent likeness, "has been known to go into hiding after each of his miracle works, thought to be regenerated with cheese"

Nice to have you back Steve!

:o Thanks for the warm welcome back guys :o

More importantly Madmouse; is that tS?

As per usual Paul my modeling was done in Silo. Nothing that cant be done in TS. I just prefer Silo for organic modeling.

That way they could be animated separately...just a thought.

Funny enough, thats exactly why I've done the eyes like is. Maybe its just me but I thought it would be easier to alter the eyes using the textures. Also means I can get away with non-spherical eyeballs.

LMAO :D Thanks Bob. I do have the body of a god........... Unfortunately though the god in question is Buddha!;)

Thanks again Guys, more coming soon.

Well I took a long hard look at what I had so far and decided that the head was far too humanoid and elfy to be considered a 'Thing'.

So, inspired by the Adipose in the new series of Dr Who on UK TV:- CLICK HERE (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Partners_in_Crime_(Doctor_Who))

The Old Children's UK TV series, 'The Flumps' :- CLICK HERE (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T1mMQtk3IUE)

and by the extremely good but simplistic styling of Franks recent work :- CLICK HERE (http://forums1.caligari.com/truespace/showthread.php?t=5226)

... I went back to the drawing board and have come up with this little fellow.

I'm not sure if I really like the tail, so I'm after opinions please.

I've attached the Old 'Thing' head in .Obj format if anyones want to pick up where I left off.

Comments and crits please guys.

cartoonishly speaking.. That kind of tail belongs to oval or almond shaped eyes.
for your round eyes, you want more of a "bunny tail" if you got rid of the bush at the end and thinned it down, then it would work.

Basically... the "lion tail" belongs on large brutish creatures and "bunny tail" or "mouse tail" belongs on small/clever creatures.

I agree Steve, the tail should be a little stubbier like the character.

However, I am gonna enjoy playing around with your head model...:D

I can envisage this creature being quite a fluffy/furry character. Do you have any plans for hair/fur? :)

Just be glad the tail is off the stern and not the bow. :)

Interesting change of direction - clearly you are after a more cartoony look. I imagine the new guy would be furry? How about a tail which is like a fuzzy beaver tail?

Your first character had something of the Dr Seuss about it I thought. Nice of you to give it away I have downloaded not because I am fully intent on continuing - I just want to have a good look to try and get a feel for how you go about what you do.

Knowing Steve's toolset...I guess that depends when Dribble 1.04 comes out...;)

As the thread opened the first thing I thought was 'Adipose', then I read your text. Haha! Guess the influence did its job properly!

Anyway, a tail would be good as it implies more 'creature/animal' than human based but I think it's far too long. My other initial thought (after 'Adipose') was that the arms are too central, I think it might benefit to move them up slightly.

Cool stuff though, will be fun to watch it develop.

LOL - too cute - looks like a peanut that's been possessed by a baby demon!

I agree with the comments about the tail - it suggests that although he's all cute and cuddly he also has an element of slight danger or menace about him. Depends on the overall effect you're after but to me his current tail gives a slight touch of 'badass' about him.

He's cool either way.

Nice to see your work again :D

( Though it took me two weeks to discover it... I blame it on the fact that I only have time to sporadically make quick-vistits to the forum now. :o)

Can imagine how that tummy would bounce when walking, really cool design! And I'd say it works both with and without the tail. Cute little chap! :D

Inspired by Wizard's suggestion (and the fact that I have a very dark side), why not have his tail curl up into a 'cute' little ball only to unfold into something more devil/imp when his mood changes along with expression and perhaps slightly bigger horns?

Just a thought.

Hmmmm.... Good points on the tail. I'm looking for a very cute character so I might loose the tail. Maybe a Stubby tail like a smurf might be suitable. I'll give it a try and post the results.

As for fur... The answer would be no. At least not unless, as Paul said, Dribble 1.04 comes out soon and the hair blows me away.

Just be glad the tail is off the stern and not the bow. LOL yep he'd be popular with the lady things alright.

As the thread opened the first thing I thought was 'Adipose', then I read your text. SHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! not so loud or I'll be getting a call from Russel T Davis :D

Thanks for all the feed back guys, much appreciated.

I'll post that smurf tail version ASAP.

Edit:

BTW just did a quick test on the stubby Smurf tail and the results are not worth posting. It makes the poor little chap look like he's desperate for the loo :o)

You could always turn it into a parody - The Adipoos. :-)

try a mouse tail, or a bunny tail. the bunny tail sweeps up to a point, and may not look as bad.... then again... you never know until you render. ;)

LOL its so easy to tell the Brits on this forum! God bless toilet humor :D

Thanks for the suggestions Kena, but I'm pretty resigned to not having a tail now. A lot easier in the long run.

Onto mapping and textures now.

Not much to say about this, just an early texture and UV test that came out quite nice, so I thought I'd share it.

Cute! and nicely modeled!

I particularly like the fact that he has an "innie" belly button. :D

Those eyes are so darn cool! I love his/her navel too!

I would suggest giving his/her clump of hair a little more prominence. I also liked Witches suggestion about raising the location of the arms slightly.
Where are you going with the mouth?

This is one of those really "cute" characters that you fall in love with until you discover it is a "meat eater"...
