Uh oh, da Mouse is at it again. :p
Hmmm...what's the twist on this one gonna be? Too early to tell yet I think. Off to a good start though as usual Mouse. :) |

I particularly like the fact that he has an "innie" belly button. Had to be... "outies" freak me out ! :)
I also liked Witches suggestion about raising the location of the arms slightly.
Where are you going with the mouth? I'll have to disagree with you and da' witch on that one Bob. If you try to imagine him with a rounded head and a neck there is already very little room. As for a mouth... that will be added in the textures and will be little more than a line drawing to add to the cartoon feel that I'm looking for.
Hmmm...what's the twist on this one gonna be? Sorry to disappoint, but no twist this time Dele. I'm after a uber cute little cartoony 'Thing' for a range of designs I'm planning to try and sell on cafepress.
Thanks for the comments guys
back with some textures soon

Looking great MM, as usual. I agree with you on the arms by the way, I think they look about right where they are, given the lack of neck etc.
Could you share (approximately) what kind of settings youused for the eyes - I always find getting the right mix of shininess, specularity and reflectivity difficult for shiny surfaces, along with using bumps to help 'diffuse' refelections... I'm guessing you've used HDRI or an environment map to give the eyes something to reflect, but the rough proportion of the other factors would help me out...
Interested to see what kind of body-texture you're going for, after the disctinctive texture of the Adipose (and after some of your grim creations previously - can we expect to see some skin textures like your devil-mech?! :D) |

Thanks Nez....
Could you share (approximately) what kind of settings you used for the eyes Sure, No problem. See attached image. The quality of the reflection is very dependent on the HDRI map used and of course the position of the scene.
Interested to see what kind of body-texture you're going for, after the disctinctive texture of the Adipose (and after some of your grim creations previously - can we expect to see some skin textures like your devil-mech? Nothing as complicated this time round. I'm looking for simple and cute with this project so no open sores or dripping wounds I'm afraid :D
HTH Nez. Give me a shout if you want any more help.

Well thats the textures done. I hope no one is disappointed as I know I'm some what known for my intricate textures, but this project requires a much simpler approach.
Any comments and crits are most welcome please guys.
Now on to the rigging, so that this little 'thing' can really come alive.

Edit: BTW these renders were not done with the setup in my previous post. I decided not to use HDRI. So I've faked the reflections using the environment shader. Not quite as good but more in keeping with the rest of the image I think. |

Less complex than your other models, but I noticed you put in the same careful detail, which is a good thing.
Details, like the highlights for 'butt' texturing. :D |

Well, not quite what I expected, but a lot of fun (if a bit too pink for my tastes!). I too like the subtle texturing detail (mottled back, lighter tum and behind), and the cartoony eyes (with predrawn specular highlight!)
Is that how you get away with no specular or shininess?!
Also interesting to see how much less time you spent on this that some of your previous efforts! Slightly disappointed not to see a demon-possessed, hairy scab-ridden little urchin ;), but you'd made it clear it wasn't going that way!:D
Nice job. |

Would work perfectly in a fun movie for children...or adults for that matter concidering how popular "finding nemo", "shrek" and similar has become.
Your modeling/texturing skill still shows, even though it's toned down in this project. And it's always good to show your potential clients that you cover everything from "cute" to "scary" :D |

I like this little guy a lot. I think you have a successful character on your hands. How do you plan to animate the mouth? |

Actually it may be a Southern Hemisphere thing but the same hought occurred to me too - and kids would really like that - they all love bottom humour:D |

Thanks for the comments Guys......
You certainly hit the 'cute' target here Steve. Does this dude have a name? No name other than 'THING' I know this sounds a bit dull but when I finally get to some finished renders all will become clear ;)
Is that how you get away with no specular or shininess?! The pre-drawn highlights were meant to help with the cartoon look of the little guy.
Call me a pervert but I want to see more buttock crevice! Get some "cheeky" action going. Ok then PERVERT!;).... I did consider emphasising the buttocks more, but when I've done this before I found it caused a few problems when posing.
How do you plan to animate the mouth? This guys not destined to be animated, but the eyes and mouth were done this way to allow me to alter them quickly in the textures without worrying about altering the mesh one way or another.
Say NO to crack!! LMAO you never fail to make me laugh Stephen :D
Thanks again for the kind words and comments.

Great THING. In spite of all the attention for its buttocks I personally like the way you did the hands and feet (pervert, who?) and would love to see the THING posed.
What software do you use for the UV mapping, Steve?

Thanks Georg, I use :-Headus UV layout (http://www.uvlayout.com/)
admittedly it is a bit on the expensive side but I was lucky enough to have brought it when it was at the pre-release beta price. For organic models I've haven't found anything that suits me better. I also us UV mapper Pro and Ultimate unwrapper but since I got Headus I tend to only use these progs for more geometrical objects.

I can definitely second Steve's recommendation of Headus UVLayout. It's the one I'm using right now as well, and you can unwrap a complex organic model like a character and get a professional mapping in a matter of hours instead of days. Also it comes with a full set of free tutorial videos which you can download right on the UVLayout website to help you with your purchase decision. ;) |

Thanks you both, I will look into that. I have been struggling with the tS UV tools but I am getting more headaches than textures.

With the quality of your work Georg, it's well worth the investment in a good UV package. Most 3D apps can push polygons well if you know what you're going. It's the UV mapping and texturing that makes the model really look professional.
UU3D is good to have around just of the file translation and works well on mechanicals. But Headus UVLayout rocks for quick and professional UV mapping of organics. And in the world of high poly modeling even the mechanicals are basically organic. LOL |

i've found a good trick with uu3d:
1. Export your model to UU3D and UV Map it BEFORE you apply any sds/ smoothing
2. In TS apply SDS and render, there will be some stretching but if you export to UU3D now you won't have as much work to do to get rid of it |
