Can I convert a nurbs object to a .obj ?

Yes.
Save the NURB object first in NURB form in case you want to re-use it.

Then with it selected, click the icon indicated below:

Once it's in polygonal form you can save as a *.cob, *.obj, etc.

I am just starting with TS and have never used nurbs before.

I am going through the video tuts.

I forgot to mention, if you right click the 'convert nurbs to poly' icon you can set some additional options.

The 'static res.' parameter will control how many polygons the converted mesh will have.
0.1- converted object will have less polygons. Rougher shape.
1.0 -converted object will have more polygons, smoother shape.
