I have several projects I would like to do in TS that I already have schematics for. is their a way to bring them into the modeler to use as a guide?

A couple of tutorials on doing this:
a little older (using an early version of 7) (http://forums1.caligari.com/truespace/showthread.php?t=1474)

and an even older pair of PDF (http://forums.caligari.com/discus/messages/1585/9582.html?) files from tS6 era.

While the tools/locations will be a bit different than the tS7.6 layout, the gist of it will be the same.

Also see the organics course which uses a background image to model against. Search the forums for the one change that has happened to tS since then, relating to applying the bitmap onto the plane, there's a slight difference to what is shown in the video.

You could just expand that process from one plane to multiple planes if you have different profile views of the object.

HTH!
