This is a character i've been drawing in pencil for a bit, tried to do a 3d model a while ago but never liked the result, got bogged down in the UV mapping.
As this months MMC was a character design one i thought i'd have another go using truespace to model and render him and 3D Coat to texture
This is the head model from the other thread, refined a bit but needing more work. After a little more work on the eyes next on the list is to refine the nose, mouth and chin.

Hadn't planned on it, i just left it out cause the face was mirrored. Now you mention it though an eye-patch could look really good..... |

Looking really good jayr! The edge flow is pretty good. I think it could be spaced out a little more on the upper sides of the head so the lines flow a bit better (maybe add another loop or two). Perhaps the line flow could be smoothed out a bit on the jaw/cheek area and nose too. Overall you've got pretty decent line flow going on though. Very nice, can't wait to see more. :) |

To get away from the head modelling i started on the body. I used an old model of mine and re-modelled it and sorted ot a few problems i noticed when posing the old one (hope this doesn't break the 'pre-modelled' rule, i did make the original models :o) I think the proportion is still out a bit, the upperbody being to long. Any advice would be helpful:

Thanks frootee, i might even get this character finished this time :D
Inspired by the WoW thead going on in the Roundtable i'm thinking of texturing him in a cartoon fashion, i've tried this brfore with toon shaders but felt it was a bit lacking. I'm going to try it with 'cartoon-paint' style textures and normal lighting and see how it works |

Ok, as the deadline is looming, here is the head model finished. he has no ears but they would have been covered anyway by hair or a hood:

Body and legs just need texturing now but i'll probably tweek the tunic to make it look like there's more material in the 'skirt' part. Hands, cloak and sword next:

Please note that the deadline ISN'T looming just yet - although no-one specifically came back on my suggestion, challenge will be extended to the end of the month so hopefully you can get a bit further along yet. ;) |

well that was a busy week! my sister got married and appart from taking the photos i was decorating the cake! just as i'm about to settle into finishing this on saturday i get a phone call that i need to finish and post a web site that night and take photos at a gig on sunday!
Now that thats over i'm going to see how far i can get with this in the next 4 hours. Heres where i'm upto:
I was tempted to re-use an older hood model i'd made till i opened it and the topology was so bad i couldn't tell what was going where, so i started again. i need to add a cloak to the hood but that'll have to wait till the rigging/ posing is done. UVing and textures next...

Shame everyone ended up in such a rush, but I really have to let someone else take the helm for a new challenge. Hope you'll stil finish of Aelric - was really coming together well and would be interested to see how you handle the next few steps (I'm a complete UV novice for instance).
But for now, the poll is up - good luck! |

yeah i do plan on finishing him even though it's too late for the comp. UVing takes me a while and i haven't decided exactly how i want him to look as far as textures go. Was thinking of going a bit toony but not cell-shaded |
