I'm finally back modelling after a long break. Been concentrating on scraping a meagre living teaching Physics and getting back into the piano for a few months. Also been a bit un-inspired of late. Haven't been keeping much of an eye on the forums either, so I look forward to finding out what you've all been up to.
Just thought I'd post my latest model. Been at it a couple of days, finding reference material, analysing the subject in detail and getting down to creating the basic features of the face. Started completely from scratch with this one, trying to tune my method. As before, I pose the question, in the manner of the immortal Rolf Harris (you need an Aussie accent of course) "Can you tell who it is yet?" |

Nice to see you back Chris. Knowing your penchant for superb detailing I'm sure we'll all be able to recognise her soon. Looks great so far.
Rolf Harris? Immortal? Scary thought though somehow I can't quite picture him crossing swords with Christopher Lambert!! ;) |

Glad to see you back Chris. :) You have been missed.
I am guessing that her father is the frontman in Areosmith? |

Great modeling
I agree with trueBlue about the ressemblance, but if this were the case I would expect the nose to be straighter -see similar view below!

Full marks to trueBlue, it is Liv Lyler.
Not bad, considering it's early days in the modelling process. She has a very deceptive nose. From one angle it appears long, thin and pointed, but you notice that it widens more than you'd think where is joins the cheek. Nothing wrong with it, of course. A very nice nose anyway.
Just polygon modelling Jayr, with SDS added. I'll post a wireframe. Started with a single plane and added a vertex at a time. Very time consuming. One of the problems with trueSpace is the inability to extrude edges and add addition points to a loop outwith the existing geometry. Welding non-contiguous points would be great as well.
I've been working from a series of referecne images from google, but can't find a high resolution side profile. If anyone can supply one, it would be much appreciated, as it would speed up the modelling process considerably.
Cheers |

Hi Chris,
Maybe this one would help? I see what you mean about the nose being deceptive...

Chris
good to see you back at the heads again! I've got a LOTR 'making-of' type book at home so I'll have a look to see if it's got any good photos that I could scan in for you. They may of course have pointy ears, but I can't remember much about what pictures are in it, so no guarantee of a side profile...
Sounds like quite a laborious modelleing method, but seeing as only have TS5 and a restricted polytools (can't register for a serial no now he's packed it in) I think I'd be in a similar boat... |

I've checked my LOTR book but was a bit disappointed - there were some small 3 quarter profile shots but not much else. Sorry :( |

Thanks for posting the links to images. I have most of them already, but one or two may prove useful.

Minor update. A lot of tweaking going. Gap in the mouth if because of the lip asymmetry I'll be fixing later. |

Vert by Vert? wow!
I'm afraid after the first hour, I'd be looking for the clay... (which is where I started modeling, a long time ago)
but .. the result is truly worth it... very very nice work!
hmmm, can I learn to do that??! mutter mutter ^_^ |

Wasn't happy about the nose, so I started it again from scratch. Nearly there I think. Once I'm ready to stop symmetric modelling, it'll start to come together. |

Didn't realise the time since my last post. Returned to this one a couple of days ago with a new perspective.
Looking forward to using truespace 7.6 in the future, and hope that the problems with vray have been ironed out.
Anyway, hope it looks a bit more like her now. |

Great work Chris! She is looking mighty fine and she is in good hands. Can't wait for one of the final renders. |

Thought I'd give it a go with the new vray. Seems to be very quick, and the results are good. This was lit with HDRI, no global illumination.
I haven't merged the sides of the mesh yet. Been done in modeller with 7.1, and I didn't optimise the mesh for mirror modelling. Once I've merged the head, I can start on the eyes which are only very basic at present, and the asymmetries to the face.

It amazes me how these head models are put together. I've never been able to make a head; I've always found it way too difficult and time consuming.
Kudos to you for going through with it :) It looks awesome :)

Awesome work!! This proves that the tool does not make the artist. :D
Back to box modeling... got a long way to go.
This project would make a great head modeling tutorial too. ;) |

Cheers all.
The hair is from Poser. Can't take the credit, but it shows what can be achieved with a simple transparency map. I'm hoping to try the hair plugin at some stage. Switching my modelling to 7.6 in workspace for the first time. I'm impressed with the the tools and will also be mirror modelling from now on. This may be a silly question, but how do I bring up a background image in workspace (can it be done?). |
