Yes, Deep Space Doris is back and ready for action. Flying the flag for good old blighty as usual. Part of an ongoing illustration project. Might pop it in the gallery this month...for the Queen and all that...;)

Same HDRi on both although you cannot see her face with helmet down due to reflections. Might play again tomorrow....;)

It looks great, however, Doris looks a little like my Senator Ted Kennedy from Massachusetts.

perhaps using fresnel reflections (increases with angle to normal) might help... though it may not be enough. If I recall, Pixar had to do some special steps with toy story to make Buzz Lightyear's face visible through reflections as well.

Paul, I'd love to know how you crank these characters out so quickly. Artist skill is obviously involved but I'm also curious about your methods. Are they created with SDS?

Her space suit does kind of resemble Buzz Lightyears. (great modeling btw).

Yep, SDS here as always. And if you think I turn the characters out quick...over the last few years I created and illustrated 23 children's books (unpublished) in my spare time as well as dozens of characters-take a peek at my website for more. Look for Buddyworld books.;)

Have you ever thought of self publishing? I know of plenty of webcomic authors/artists who've gone that route.

Given it some thought mate-just too busy at school and University (MA) at the moment. I did have a literary agent but I gave him the heave-ho after a year of nothing happening....bad move! He did more in that year than I have in last two.

Can't find an agent at all now-all the ones that suit my work are accepting no more clients...oh well..maybe their loss, maybe not...

Hmm... I see what you mean about busy. Don't know how you handle both school & Uni.

If you can live without the extra cash until after Uni's finished then that'd probably be the best idea. When I said "self publishing", I didn't mean badger [badger, badger, mushroom, mushroom :D ] agents, publicisits, etc, I meant it a bit more literally than you seem to have taken it.

Some webcomics do go the route you're thinking of. On my reading list (http://homepage.ntlworld.com/alien42/comiclinks) there's actually only 1 [Sokora Refugees] that's gone that route, *that I know of*. From what I can gather, the most popular method tends to go something like this:

Get some feedback from your target audience on level of interest to see if it's worth going any further.

Look into pricing from various printing companies, both local & internet based.

When you've found somewhere that offers a deal you like, mention price per unit [as well as p&p] to target audience again, see if they're still interested.

If they are, take pre-orders for at least as many copies as it takes cover the costs of printing [or at least to cover the deposit the printers want], when you have the money, get them printed, & post them off.

Some printing places will also handle distribution as well.

Disclaimer: some [most] of the comics on my reading list are most definitely not suitable for kids, & quite a few would not be appreciated by anyone easily offended, especially those of a religious disposition. The "worst offender", Ghastly's Ghastly comic would actually be considered NSFW, so... don't say you haven't been warned. :D

P.S. If the previous paragraph makes you think that it might apply to you, but you'd still like to read some that are not so... "offensive", I'd be only too happy to give recommendations.

<edit>

Now that I think of it, there are a few other comics who have gone via publishers, but have later decided to handle things themselves.

</edit>

No, I understand what you meant Alien, I just digressed about the agent...

In case the School/Uni bit got confusing, I am busy teaching Design at school and studying my MA at university, still work a bit for Caligari and I have a family too...unfortunately my books have had to go on hold until I get more time.....:o

Ah, I see. :)

Yeah, I figured that was the case.

still work a bit for Caligari and I have a family too...

Yikes! Dunno how you do it. Do you have a uniform, or at least a cape? :D

unfortunately my books have had to go on hold until I get more time.....:oYeah, I can see why. Still, when you do have a bit more time on your hand at least you have your minions <cough> I mean family to provide extra helping hands [stuff like labelling envelopes, etc]. :)

Cheers for support guys. Something a liitle more humourous (at least if you imagine Buzz Lightyear with a handbag), Oh, and Buzz is the best CGI character ever....without doubt!

LOL. Actually, when I 1st saw the title of the thread, before I saw the 1st pic, I was expecting Doris to be a lot more... porcine, but I guess that's just me showing my age [only 4 years younger than you ;)].

Hmm... not sure I'd go that far. Sure, he was good in his day, but there's been a lot of others since. Donkey [from Shrek] springs to mind as a more recent example.

Maybe not technically but he has a special place in my heart, and the original toy has a place on my shelf next to the PC. After all Toy Story was a milestone in full length CGI films-the first I believe and for that Buzz deserves some credit.....

Porcine:resembling swine; coarsely gluttonous or greedy; "piggish table manners"; "the piggy fat-cheeked little boy and his porcine pot-bellied father"; "swinish slavering over food"

I wouldn't exactly put my money on Kate Moss if they were both in a pie eating competition......

Ah Doris! I remember her fondly from the Caligalleries. Around that time I first saw her (and her cool spaceship) I'd just got my copy of tS5.1. I saw the Doris images and was both totally delighted and quite inspired - characters like your Doris have had a huge impact on what I strive for in the look of my own work - a touch of whimsy and gentle irony mixed with a humerous human fantasy element.

I think I'm still striving but you have definitely set a standard that I aspire to. Thanks for sharing.

It's great to see Doris is still flying the friendly skies. :D

Thanks Wizard-they are genuinely nice words and a real compliment. From what I have seen of your work it is very good.

Doris is enterd for gallery this month-more in a vain hope of seeing the union jack on those pages than anything else but there is much more of her to come.....

"...hope of seeing the union jack on those pages than anything else..." Chuckle! I'm an ex-pat Brit myself so that sounds like a good reason all by itself let alone the artistic considerations! :D

Good luck with your Doris entry (but not too much as I've also entered images myself - and you already have tS7!! ;) ).

Looking forward to more of Doris - does she have a backstory? I seem to be unable to make characters without giving them an elaborate history.

To illustrate the point, here is 'The Grand Ink-wizitor' (left) feeling a touch of mal-de-mer whilst conversing with Captain Omen of the good ship 'Red Courage'.....
