Well we had the plumber round today to replace our non-functioning hot water cylinder which is situated on the other side of the wall from my computer - not very conducive to recording and composing music. So what better excuse for warming up tS6.6 and revisiting a couple of old projects?
The first picture is of a model I made of the Maori Whanau (pronounced Far-now) symbol - there is an earlier picture of this symbol in the monthly galleries from last October (I think). The symbol is usually carved either from Pounamu (a type of Jade also called Greenstone because it's ... er green!) or from bone. It symbolises the interconnectedness of the Whanau or family.
The second pic it the familiar Tao symbol - known to surfies the world over as the yin-yang symbol.
I think that tS rocks at this sort of thing myself. Hope you folk enjoy these in the meantime until I can get some serious tS-ing done!

Once again the W!ZARD has conjured up some magic for us.
Simple, effective and great work Stephen. Lets hope the plumber cant find the parts he needs to soon.:)

Yup, thoose who don't recognize the Tao symbol...eh, do they really exist?
But the Maori one was new to me. Would be nice to see more of that. :D
Strange coincidence...did see an episode of WildBoyz (the stupid guys from Jackass) on MTV yesterday...and one of them got what I think was an authentic Maori tattoo ( painfully hammered into the skin with a tool made of bones..?)...don't recall what that symbol was called though, but it was slightly similar to yours. |

Thanks for the comment Mr Shike. Maori traditional tattoos have been enjoying a huge increase in popularity - not just the hammered style which tattoos and also scars the skin but Maori symbols tattooed with a standard tat gun.
Maori facial tattoos (called Moku) are becoming quite popular too - they usually have a spiritual significance and power associated with them.
The tradition of tattooing is very much alive in New Zealand - apparently New Zealanders are the most tattooed people in the world (per head of population). Tats are very popular here - I myself have two tattoos - a butterfly on my right fore arm and a dragon on my left upper arm. |

Yes, can imagine that the traditions are a part of the popularity.
In Sweden (and probably a lot of other countries) Tattos where previously associated to bikers, sailors, criminals...and rebelling youth, and you could hardly get a job if you had a visible tatto ;)
Now it's become accepted, and it's very common with Tribal-patterns and Asian letters, not sure about Maori, but since it's exotic for a northerner I supect it's also common..? :D
Personally I don't have any tattos. Since I don't like physical training... the canvas is too small ;) |
