I think all the text and colouring are just fine, but then what I know about web design you could write on the back of a postage stamp. I love the shiny plastic "porthole" and the bright, blue rings placed on the black backdrop are a really imaginative touch. Overall, I think the design works extremely well and would think that once seen it would certainly stick in someone's memory. On a personal note, I'm afraid the eyes just don't work for me. I don't know what it is and I have stared at the image for quite a while and still can't quite figure it out. It might be the lack of a personal connection and the fact that he seems far more interested in something over my right shoulder than me. That's just a guess though. If I manage to figure it out, I'll let you know. |

Thanks for the feedback guys, you've got some good point there....
I think you might run into problems with your website name. Yep, that did cross my mind, but it is a simple thing to remove it if it gets a little small as its been added post production and not part of the textures.
The blue text at the top is possible too dark. Yep again, I must of tried every shade of blue (and other colors) know to man before settling on this one. I went with this because it was the best match with the neon rings behind my thing.
I picture the Thing holding the "Everyday" text between his hands. yep once more, I toyed with the same idea but I felt that it would obscure too much of the thing and with no text at the top would make the logo bottom heavy.
The hand textures has the same freckle on both hands Aaaaaargh! how did I miss that? It amazes me that you can look at an image for hours and not spot the simplest thing. Good catch Bob.
You might want to think about different aspect rations too - for a website banner for example you might try the words to the side of the image in which case will the dissimilar colour schemes in the text work? Good point Stephen, I hadn't considered having the text to one side, and yes, I think the different colors schemes will look a little odd. I'll do some tests.
....but I am speaking to my lawyers today about that Planet Hoppers colour scheme... Uh Oh! er... um...... Put me down for a life subscription to Buddyworld :D
A little CSS or Flash magic and you can make the url text pop out when hovered over Good idea James. When I get to adding this to my site I'll bear that in mind.
I like how your thing pops out of the background. and the case comes up next week:D
Let's hope that never gets taken out of context Whoops! too late :D
I'm afraid the eyes just don't work for me. Ummmmm...
If I manage to figure it out, I'll let you know.
Ok... thanks.
Thanks again guys. Very helpful comments. |

Ok.... I've tweaked the image a little.
I've taken away those nasty freckles.
After much thought, I've decided to change the name to Fingz. I prefer the look of it and there is no everydayfingz domain registered. So from now on these guys should be referred to as Fingz (or maybe 'the artist formally known as things':D)
I've also added a little shine on the bottom text to help it match up with the top a little better.
What do you think??? |

What do you think???
The modelling, texturing and posing are, of course, first class and it's practically impossible to pick fault. The grammar, however, I despair of. 'Fingz'? In an age where language is being massacred by that wretched 'text speak' and pure laziness this is just one more nail in the coffin. And, on a purely artistic level, I don't think it looks as good as the proper word. |

Kate took tha werds rite outta me mouf. Besides, the word 'Thing' is one of my favourite words, right up there with dodecahedron (a 20 sided 'thing' ;)).
I like the added shine on the bottom text and love every'thing' else about it. |

Sorry MadMouse, perhaps my comments weren't that useful. I guess the point I was trying to make was that if your aim is to forge an emotional link between an inanimate object and its intended audience, then posing the figure so that it makes direct eye contact with the viewer might be more effective. If you look at the poster below, and I apologise for yet another Toy Story reference on this thread, then you'll notice that every character is looking directly at you. I'm assuming of course that this was a deliberate ploy by the chaps at Disney who after all probably know a thing or two about advertising campaigns.
PS. I like the new gloss on the lettering but must agree with everyone else as to the name change being a step backward. |

What an awesome character MadMouse! I like everything you have done with this as I have been following it from the begining. One little thing I do not care for is the blood shot eyes. For little kids this might be kind of scary. Well done sir I am sure this going to be big hit. :) |

I couldn't agree with you more about the degradation of the English language by 'text speak'. I despair at the endless procession of monosyllabic neanderthal illiterates that are churned out by our failing comprehensive schools. (and working in a factory (Hornby Hobbies) I probably see more than most. (Not all of course, before Mr. Splinters the teacher gives me detention ;):D)
With that said, I doubt that my little contribution will make much of an impact either way. And if this is the syntax that the 'Kids' are using then maybe that is all the more reason to use 'Fingz'. Lets us not forget that this is a commercial project and is aimed at a younger audience.
Opinion on this seems to be very divided. Although the general feeling here is that 'Fingz' is a 'Step backward', I have conducted a small poll of my friends and colleagues away from this forum and there seems to be a pretty even split between the ya and the nays.
Personally I prefer 'Fingz' as I feel it is more memorable, snappy and eye catching. Another deciding factor for me is that in the fullness of time I wanted a website for these designs and there already exist a www.everydaythings.co.uk and other variations. Whereas 'everydayfingz' is not use at all and if entered in Google the only result is this thread!.
So for the good or the bad the 'Fingz' are here to stay. I value your opinions and take your points but I intend to stick with my 'vision'.
I'm assuming of course that this was a deliberate ploy by the chaps at Disney who after all probably know a thing or two about advertising campaigns. Indeed, maybe I'll have to take a second look (if you'll pardon the pun) at this.:D

For little kids this might be kind of scary. Thanks, yes maybe your right but these images are not aimed at a very young audience so I think the comedy effect of the blood shot eyes out ways any possible scare factor.
Thanks again guys

I have no problem with the text. Well, I do but only in an educational sense.
No, I think I know where this might be heading and, if it is into the public domain, then you have to acknowledge the 'chav' demographic; the one that buys the T-Shirt saying 'My mum went to Disneyland and all I go was this stinkin' t-shirt'.
It may get your backs up but that is the simple fact of life. Celebrity wannabees become more famous than the people who really affect the world. Any goon can go on TV, make a fool of themselves and become famous.
This is not to detract from Madmouse's work which is excellent, but if you want some commercial success (which I am guessing we all do) then you have to do this sort of thing.
It is not selling out, but simply knowing your audience.
I used to despair when teaching if I did not amaze and impress my students with my passion for a particular subject. Over years I understood the importance of simply keeping them actively occupied. That I had a passion was enough. That a few eventually shared it was a bonus...:D |

Damn right! Bravo and good on ya, sir!
Making something well known and then making a unique but recognisably familiar version of it is a staple policy in the advertising world so no reason why you shouldn't use it too.
Far from being a linguistic snob I'm quite happy to chew up the Queens English for my own uses on occasion - but there is a big difference between choosing to not use the proper language and not being able to use the proper language, innit? :D
What leads me to the occasional bout of despair is the apparent general ubiquity of ignorance - as the saying goes, "The two most common elements in the Universe are Hydrogen and Stupidity"!
I don't think the use of 'Fingz' is in itself a bad fing... er thing - in fact, you've probably got your thinger right on the pulse of fingz as far as the youngsters go - I fink!
Either way my friend, all the best of good luck with your venture and let me say I hope Fingz pan out well for you ;). |

No problems; just mark me down for 10%. :D
On a more serious note, I always knew the image would be better served with the eyes adjusted but even I'm amazed at just how much of an impact the alteration makes. As 3dfrog has already stated, a top notch image. Well done MadMouse and I hope all goes well with the project. |
