I was recently gifted a copy of Vue 5 Esprit and so I've been dabbling with it. From what I've seen so far on the Net a lot of Vue users use commercially available models and pose them to make art.

As a trueSpace fan though I personally prefer to use models and textures that I have built myself whenever possible. This means I've been busy converting some of my trueSpace models for use in Vue. This is a time consuming process as trueSpace is very forgiving of dodgy modelling (of which I've done my share! :D ) - Vue on the other hand demands high quality meshes. This has been good for me in that it has certainly honed my understanding of building a good mesh and will hopefully help improve my overall modelling skills.

I've now worked out a modelling workflow that allows me to use trueSpace meshes in Vue and I'm happy to share what I've learnt if there is anyone interested.

To give you some idea of what I've been doing here are some of my recent images, rendered with Vue 5 Esprit and using meshes that were built and textured with tS 6.6. Those of you familiar with my work will no doubt recognise some of this stuff.

The first image is my whimsical junk complete with crew - all tS modelled of course.

The second image uses repeated versions of the low poly Chris that comes with tS's Facial Animator grafted to parts of a free X-frog tree and retextured. The blue birds and mushrooms I made with tS and some of the plants were heavily modified (in tS 6.6) 3ds meshes from 3dplants.com. Other plants are native Vue vegetation.

The third image uses various meshes from earlier tS images of mine - everything you see here was modelled by me - (incidentally this is the most commented on picture in my gallery at Renderosity (http://www.renderosity.com/mod/gallery/browse.php?username=WZRD) so I guess the Vue fans there liked it! I hope you do too.....

Please let me know what you think.

Here's my latest - many of you will no doubt recognise the castle. For those who don't I modelled it on photos of Scottish Towerhouse Craigievar Castle. The observant among you will see my mushrooms, my Dododecahedron bird and my Wizards truck complete with passengers. This image uses Vue's Global Radiosity features and contains just under 2 million polygons.

I'll post a bigger version at my Renderosity Gallery (http://www.renderosity.com/mod/gallery/browse.php?username=WZRD)for those interested in a higher resolution view.

:D

Thanks Mr Mouse - your kind support as always is appreciated Steve! Looking forward to seeing your new website too.

Splinters: Thanks Paul. TBH I've never even been to CGTalk although I've often seen it mentioned. I'm on a creaky old dial-up connection (embarrassing in this day and age I know!) and so I tend to limit my surfing and my posting to a few favourite sites - obviously here in Caligaria :D and also at Renderosity (as I think I mentioned ;) ) and occasionally at 3dcommune where I've always been made to feel most welcome by the tS forum mod there (Sue88) although the tS forum and gallery there is pretty quiet they are nice friendly folk there. Recently I've been posting in ther Vue forums and singing tS's modelling praises.

I guess that now you've suggested it I should go and take a look at CGTalk as well - my horror-scope for today said a friend would give me a useful suggestion today and this sounds like it might qualify!!

wow awesome work Wiz.

I have been looking at Vue as a replacement for my antiquated copy of Bryce3D to do terrain renders and scenes and it looks great.. waiting on version 6 to be released before I put money down though.

Thanks Patrick - glad you like my pics. For what it's worth I also have Bryce 5 and I've only really used it once or twice - to be fair I've seen a LOT of really good work done with Bryce but I found Vue so much easier to use that I wanted to keep coming back too it - by comparison the whole time I was playing with Bryce I couldn't wait to get back to trueSpace! Vue has the advantage of coming with lots of preset atmospheres and other content which is easily edited to make it uniquely your own - in some ways it's almost too easy!! Not as much of a challenge when you can make a tree just by clicking the tre icon! This is of course also a huge advantage as it frees you to concentrate on othert aspects of your art.

For me at the moment I'm finding a lot of satisfaction from combining trueSpace with Vue - I'm pretty confident you will too!

These are very nice, have you give it a thought of submitting them to August Gallery?

Thanks Roman - I'm glad you like them. Sorry for the delay in replying, I've not been able to get online for the last week and I'm only now catching up with my emails.

It never occured to me to post them to the Monthly Galleries because they weren't rendered with a native trueSpace renderer but if I'm more than happy to submit them and let you decide if they qualify - I'll submit them later this evening (I'm still wading through a mountain of backed up messages and email!!).

On a related note, though I've not been able to get online I've been spending the time modelling instead, working on a modelling space station with trueSpace. There's a long way to go with that yet but I'll share the results with you all in a relevant thread.

Here's another Vue render using my own trueSpace models. Followers of my work will undoudtedly recognize my old lighthouse and the Wizard and SpaceWitch characters and their truck. Also made in trueSpace especially for this scene is the terrains and terrain textures, the roads and the seagulls.

The two figures at the extreme left are models that come with Vue 5 Esprit and the sailing ship is from the cornucopia.com website.

Hope you all enjoy these and please leave a comment or two....

Well I'm very happy to say that I've just learned that the 2nd image in this series - The Dreaming Tree - won 1st place in a Cornucopia3d.com monthly challenge! For anyone who doesn't know Cornucopia3d,com is the home of the Vue community. The theme of the challenge was "Portrait of a Tree".

This is only the second challenge I've entered over there - clearly all my trueSpacing has payed off! I've also made a big point of spreading the trueSpace word over there. I consider this another win for the whole trueSpace community!

Cheers Steve.

Sadly I can't provide a link to the other entries - it seems they ditch the challenge images once the contest is over and just keep the winners - which is a shame really because there was some good work there. I'm constantly being amazed at the great art that folk can make with Vue but I have to say their website doesn't show it off as well as it could - the best place I've found for looking at good Vue art is at the Renderosity Vue gallery.

Well done with all your gallery submissions. You must racking up the awards and prizes now. I must get round to submitting some stuff to galleries more often. Problem is, I'm never pleased enough with my work to consider it finished. I've had some feedback from my Charlize model at 3d total, but they generally tend ignore anything unless it's produced by 3d studio or maya. Once she's ready, I'll submit some images, and see how it goes. Should be Ok to submit to the monthly galleries, after all, vray is essentially a separate rendering engine, if better integrated. I like the model galleon in the background. Is it free to download? Been thinking of building one myself recently.

Keep up the good work.

Chris

Hi Chris - thanks for the kind words - I dunno about racking up prizes and awards but it's sure nice to get some recognition for all those long lonely hours slaving over a hot keyboard with nothing but a mouse for company... (pauses to let violins play)...

Seriously though I know what you mean about considering a picture 'finished'. I saw it well put somewhere recently when someone said "an artwork is never finished, merely abandoned".

Re the model galleon in the pic above. No it's not free but for anyone buying one of the Vue 5x software packages from e-on software you get a $50.00 voucher to spend in their online store at www.cornucopia.com. The ship, actually a French Warship, came from there. They have a selection of very nice models there in the native view format.

Thanks again

Stephen
