Thanks for the welcome W!zard.
Interestingly, I'm also from Medway - grew up in Rainham and returned after Uni.
I'll definitely look for those Rama books - sounds like I'd enjoy them. I thought the Greg Bear stuff was great - what I think of as 'hard' sci-fi because the science is quite a strong feature (and quite advanced - singularities and stuff!).
Look forward to seeing some more of your work - I've never tried a space scene in Truespace but really ought to give it a go....
Hey cool! I remember Rainham quite well. I worked for a while at Comet, the electrical wholesalers, and did a lot of delivery driving all through Kent so I used to drive through Rainham quite regularly. Additionally when I was a small kid I lived at the bottom of the hill in Gillingham not far from the Strand.
Sounds like we also share a love of 'hard' SciFi too. Not to mention 3d graphics of course!! |

Congratulations on making into the Best of Forums! Very well deserved. I would also like to thank you for sharing your techniques for I know this takes a lot of time and effort, and I am very grateful. |

Belated congratulations on those great renders!! I especially love those inside renders of the station. :) Most excellent work indeed!!
(You wouldn't have by any chance some higher resolution screenshots of those renders, would you?) |

Thanks Skipper - glad you like my work.
Hi res shots? Um, the biggest I have is 1024 x 768 but I've not posted it anywhere you can see it.
OK I've just uploaded the 1024x768 version to my Renderosity gallery. Just click the link at the bottom of my signature to get there and click the thumbnail.
I'd render a bigger version but this is a HUGE scene and takes a significant amount of time to render, even on my new dual core computer.
Cheers.

Thank you for the higher rez render, it's really unfortunate that it isn't much bigger, it just doesn't do the work involved justice, especially as a wallpaper on a 24" wide-aspect monitor.
Great gallery, btw, your portfolio is quite broad... impressive work on the seagoing vessels. :) |

Thanks Skipper. Out of curiosity what sort of resolution are you looking for? I'm still using a good old fashioned 17 inch CRT monitor (well actually 2 of them) and I tend to let that determine my render resolutions. Most of my recent stuff is 1280 x 1024 which is probably not that great for a wide aspect monitor! |

That would be 1920x1200 for a 24" wide-aspect and 1600x1200 for a regular 20" flat panel monitor.
Man, you really need to upgrade, it's like Michelangelo had been painting on letter-sized paper napkins instead of chapel ceilings. :D |

Chuckle - tell that to my Minister of Finance! She is co-funding my computer costs as it is, and whilst the monitors are old the PC is not. I'm using a dual monitor arrangement so my total desktop space is 1280x1024x2 or 2560 x 1024 which actually makes my workspace bigger than yours.
These days there are so many variations and options available it's difficult to know what size to render at. Recently I've been rendering at 2560x2048 and then downsampling for improved AA. |

Well, I don't think anybody would complain if you'd render your compositions bigger than 1920x1600. :D |
