At the risk of blowing my own trumpet I thought I'd share with you all this image. It's just been voted winner of a monthly forum challenge over at Cornucopia3d.com - that's two wins in a row!! For those who aren't familiar with it, cornucopia3d.com is home of eon softwares Vue family of landscape renderers.

All good advertising for trueSpace and Caligari of course seeing as the vast majority of the elements in the picture were modelled with trueSpace 6.6 and I proudly told them all so!!

The challenge was on the theme of "Moon". There were some 22 other entries and I squeaked into the winnning slot with 10 points, there were three 2nd place-getters with 9 points each.

The picture, entitled "Moon on Fire" was rendered in Vue 5 Esprit but the houses, the bridge and many of ther textures were made with trueSpace.

Please enjoy and feel free to leave a comment...

Thanx

W!ZARD

Congratulations W!zard !

My favorite is the bridge and the shelter behind it. Would make a cool rendering with just those two object close up.

Well thank you all for the kind words.

I just realised that I never told the background story for this picture although it's probably fairly obvious. We're looking at a distant solar system as a group of rogue cometary fragments pass through, some of which impact on a local moon leaving fresh craters while the local inhabitants sleep unkowingly in their pod houses.

Daybe, no prize as such just the priviledge of choosing the theme for the next challenge plus the right to use the little challenge winner graphic I posted with the picture.

Several of you have commented on the lighting - I consider this to be one of the strengths of Vue as a landscape renderer - obviously you can achieve similar results with trueSpace but it does take a lot more trial and error.

In early December I will be posting two images (one of which is currently entered as a competition piece so I can't show it till the competion is over). These show a scene as rendered to the best of my ability using trueSpace alone plus the same scene using the trueSpace models rendered in Vue - I think you may be interested by the results.

Thanks again for the support folks:)

Just a further update for anyone interested - I've just received a permission request from SciFi.com. They want to use this picture as their front page cover scene for a week after which it'll be displayed in the SciFi.com gallery.

I've no idea if this is a big deal or not but it does mean LOTS of folk will get to see my work - even though it's not photoreal!

Congrats Wizard! That is great news and will certainly give you some great exposure as an artist. Maybe it will lead to a job modelling office furniture!

Great news Wizard, and as you say, exposure is no bad thing. You deserve it mate...:)

Reminds me of high res images of the game art in Jak and Daxter (first one) during the night scenes on their little island.

Congrats Wizard.

You're making quite a habit of this now. Your success clearly comes down to creating your scenes from a background story, and you've found a winning formula. Must give it a try myself.

Thanks Steinie - with all these lovely compliments and good wishes to keep me humble? I hope my head will stay within the alloted pixel size!:D

Splinters - sorry I'm not familiar with the game you mention.

Morgan - thanks I was aiming for an organic feel having just read a sci fi book that mentioned pod houses - this was my visualisation of those.

Thanks for all the kind words folks - they mean a lot.

Hey W!zard, that is too awesome! Congratulations to you.

Much more of your work deserves recognition as well, but for the time being I'm glad for you that you've got this one out there in the public eye. Good work.

Thank you gentlemen - your kind words are appreciated.

Brian - I have a PS2 but I don't get much time to play games on it as I'd rather be creating stuff. I don't have anything against weasels in the right place - in my country they cause a lot of havoc among the native bird populations so they are considered a noxious pest.

Rareth - Patrick it's my understanding that the image will be on the front page of their website for a week and then placed in their online gallery

Weevil - though I've used terragen heightfields in other pictures the terrains in this pic were all made and modified in Vue Esprit - the houses, the rope bridge, the lanterns and some of the vegetation was modelled in tS 6.6

Thanks again to everyone for your kind words, encouragement and support - it makes an otherwise solitary hobby all the more rewarding for me!:D
