Re your robot - Nez, you have a great knack when it comes to original and slightly odd design - this robot rocks and I can just see him trundling around the hanger servicing that cool plane you made recently - top wok, I like it!

Interesting typo W!zard - you may have just inspired another character :D

Influenced by kitchen utensils/equipment...

I had just been considering developing a second character called Mike - based around microphones and speakers and the like, naturally - so may start to develop multiple characters - actually, as I think about it, a whole band would be fun too... this could keep me going for months!

Thanks for the kind words everyone - and for the links Steinie - need to go back and look at that old thread again... I do like him shiny but reckon I need to have a go at bashing him up a bit too, but am in no rush. Started trying to fiddle with UV mapping at the weekend and it did my head in!

Pretty amazing huh!?Nez lives at the top of the hill I lived at the bottom of in Gillingham. Small world alright!

@Nez - Top Wok! Sounds like a Chinese Takeaway!

Actually, I'm not in Gillingham proper any more, as I moved back to Rainham (whereI grew up), but still, only a few miles away.

Yep, my mind is boiling over with ideas for characters at the mo, but will have to see how they pan out... see, your puns are rubbing off on me!

Have been back through MM's (amazing) texture job on the original mech (all 24 pages - thanks Steinie for the link) - so cool. I'm sure I'm going to have some fun playing with texture painting - not too afraid of that part, but the unwrapping process that's leaving me concerned.

Like MM in that example, was assuming I'd probably try to handle elements in relatively small sections rather than trying to do a load of parts in one map but the main hurdle is how to unwrap those awkward shapes and how to prepare an awkward shape to make it as easy to unwrap as possible....

Bear in mind I'm in TS5 and have no money for buying software! I've got UVMapper Classic (the older free version of UVMapper Pro, which is what MM used for the mech). I'm not too worried about the painting part - I've got PSP and Photoshop to hand, but am struggling to work out how best to unwrap objects. If I take a single object, like the torso (if I exclude the grill and shoulders), the resultant shape is vaguely boxy but has some recessed areas; is it sensible to apply colours to different areas so they can be separeted in the mapping? even when I tried this and used a cubic projection, I found that I was getting some splittingof the map and I don't know what some areas relate to on the original mesh! Think this is going to take a while....

NB I'm assuming it's sensible to unwrap the non-subdivided object? But if I do that, am I likley to suffer a load of stretching later or is it not that big an issue? (or depends on the mesh?) I'd like to see some examples of good UV maps on single objects such as parts of the mech...

Ah OK - it's been 21 years since I was last there and I might be thinking of Rainham Road at the top of Chatham Hill on the A2. Google Earth shows Rainham as a small patch of woodland on the M2 just down from the motorway service stop

Google Roadkill - it's a stand-alone uv unwrapper. You export your mesh as an OBJ using LUUV, load it into Roadkill and it lets you unwrap it into manageable sections. Load the mesh back into tS 5 using LUUV and the tS UV editor should allow you to fine tune the UV coordinates just fine - I think, it's been a while since I used tS 5. - Or use UV unwrapper. Hopefully it will give you an image you can export to PSP and paint to your hearts content.

I haven't tried ERoadkill - don't know how it compares with UVMapper Classic, which is all I'bve tried so far, and I'm only just starting out with that. No TS UV editor in v5. Mani problem at the moment is getting a sensible 'unwrap' in the first place - think I need to subdivide my objects by pre-colouring or similar to allow me to map difficult faces etc more easily - just about learning the best way to manage this kind of thing I guess... but thanks for the tips - guess I should look at Roadkill too...

For Rainham, see attached - I'm round about the red circle - briefly lived closer to 'Grange' area of Gillingham at the left (near the Gillingham station, up the hill from the Strand) - and you can just see Faversham at the right hand edge. But I digress...

Is it true that the British accent comes from 60 million people being jammed up in a place a little larger than the size of the state of Oregon in the U.S.?

You know, that intake a large breath, speaking and only breathing in through one nostril later on while trying not being noticed?

Oh never mind, I was thinking of water polo refererees. I get those two confused.

It's worse than that James - 1 third of the British Isles are uninhabited mountainous regions. Absolutely no good for water polo at all!

@Nez - ah, so I was reasonably close then. In my early twenties I lived just around the corner from Gillingham station.

Re Roadkill - it's an unwrapper and that's about all it does - an odd little program but it worked OK for me.
